Sean Mahoney Selected to the ODP National Team For the Second Consecutive Year

April 16, 2026-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that Sean Mahoney has been selected to the Olympic Development Program (ODP) National Team for the second year in a row.

His best experience with ODP so far has been travelling to Italy last year (photo above) with the ODP National Team to play in the 44th Annual Maggoni Righi Torneo Internazionale di Calcio, where they played pro academy teams such as Juventus and US Catanzaro 1921.

Sean has played for Eastern New York ODP from Under-12 through Under-18, the East Region three times and was the East Region team’s captain this past year.

From his midfield position, Sean helped lead New York Hota Bavarian 2008 Blue to the State Cup and Regional championship last year as well as the semifinals of Nationals.

He was a three-year varsity starter at Oceanside High School and captained the Sailors last fall to the Conference AAA championship and was named Class AAA Player of the Year, All-County, All-State, All-Region while leading Class AAA with 17 assists.

The Oceanside resident hopes to continue scoring golazos (like this one for Hota during the 2025 Regional Final) for SUNY Cortland this fall.

ODP is the highest level of play in every state association. Eastern New York has a particularly strong ODP and three current members of the US Women’s National Team––Sam Coffey, Claire Hutton and Phallon Tullis-Joyce––all developed their skills playing in our program.

Our players’ immense talent will be on display when Eastern New York hosts the 6th Annual ODP Sub Regional on April 25 and 26 at Afrim’s Sports Park in Colonie.

ODP Sub Regional to Be Played on April 25 and 26 in Colonie

April 7, 2026-The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is the highest level of play in each state association. Under the direction of Wayne Fortino, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has a particularly strong program and current US Women’s National Team players Sam Coffey, Claire Hutton and Phallon Tullis-Joyce are all Eastern New York ODP alumnae.

Eastern New York is pleased to announce that our 6th Annual ODP Sub Regional will take place on April 25 and 26 at Afrim’s Sports Park in Colonie. Hosting are the North and South Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams from Eastern New York. Because the geographic region of our state association is quite large, we feature both North and South ODP teams.

The Under-12 to Under-17 boys will be playing on Saturday, April 25 while the girls in those same age groups will be competing on Sunday, April 26. The other state associations participating are Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York West and Vermont.

College coaches and regional coaches will be scouting the players participating a month before the ODP Regional ID Tournament, making the coaches’ job a little easier in evaluating these top players.

Eastern New York Places 35 Players on the ODP Interregional Team

Eastern New York Tabs Wayne Fortino as ODP Director

May 29, 2025-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Wayne Fortino of Massapequa Park is the new Director of our Olympic Development Program (ODP). Wayne will be taking over for Jim Volpe, the Eastern New York Hall of Famer and ODP Director for the past 11 years, who is retiring.

“I’m honored to continue the amazing work of the outgoing ODP Director, Jim Volpe. Under his guidance, Eastern New York ODP has become one of the most respected and progressive programs in the country,” Wayne stated. “Jim’s tireless effort to make ODP more accessible and build an outstanding coaching staff is an incredible achievement.”

ODP is a high-level supplementary program where players are guaranteed to be seen by National and Regional coaches. Eastern New York ODP players try out and if selected, they train on Monday nights. Nearly all the games they play are in tournaments in New York, across the USA and sometimes even overseas. We have a particularly strong program as four current players on the US Women’s National Team––Sam Coffey, Crystal Dunn, Claire Hutton and Phallon Tullis-Joyce––and one on the US Men’s National team––Joe Scally––all were in Eastern New York ODP as teenagers.

“There is a good lineage of our ODP players going on to the US National Team program,” Wayne said. “Great for our kids to see somebody there that they can emulate.”

Wayne grew up in southwest England and came to the United States three decades ago to coach with NOGA Soccer. He has been coaching ever since in New York with top youth teams and spent seven years as an assistant with the St. John’s University women.

Despite growing up a very long kick from Manchester, he’s a lifelong and passionate Manchester City fan. Wayne explained, “I was watching Peter Barnes play for England on TV, liked the way that he played and since his club team was Man City, I became their supporter.”

Wayne is CEO of Quest Sports Travel, which helps American squads (including college teams) travel internationally to compete, and also does consulting work for student/athletes to help them move on to college soccer.

“I would like to continue to keep the access for everyone and continue to spread the word about ODP. Finding ways to educate all soccer families about the benefits of this wonderful program is important,” he explained. With this in mind, Wayne will be speaking at the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) Annual General Meeting on Wednesday night, June 26 at 7 pm at the Gjøa Clubhouse, 850 62nd Street in Brooklyn.

Wayne said, “The ODP coaching curriculum written by Adelphi men’s soccer coach Gary Book is exceptional. Our outstanding head coaches, John Fitzgerald with the boys and Sue Ryan with the girls, use it with our coaching staff to take a group of 25 kids who haven’t played together and develop a style of play. Eastern New York ODP’s style is possession-based, keeping shape and moving forward on the attack and when defending, press but also know when to drop.”

“Winning is something we all want but Development is key and that word is even in the name, Olympic Development Program,” Wayne added.

Apply For an ODP College Scholarship

April 17, 2025-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the ODP College Scholarship Program. One boy and one girl will receive a scholarship. The criteria are:

Must be a high school senior.
Must be a current Eastern New York ODP player or have played Eastern New York ODP.
Must have a B average or higher.
Must plan on attending a school of higher education after high school graduation.
Must submit a 200-word essay on why you deserve this scholarship. (Essay must include name, address, phone number and e-mail address)

Seven Players From Eastern New York Make the ODP National Team
