Director of Coaching Instruction Tim Bradbury Selected as Personality of the Month

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer AssociationTim_Bradbury-2019_for_Web2-small

August 9, 2019-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that our Director of Coaching Instruction, Tim Bradbury, is being honored as our August Personality of the Month.

“We are very happy to honor Tim this month,” said ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “He is a very well-thought of coach and instructor who has done an excellent job in the very challenging and exhausting role as our Director of Coaching Instruction for the past decade.”

Our honoree grew up playing center midfield in Stoke-on-Trent, England for youth club Trentham Romans and then for the Staffordshire County Team, North of England Under-18, Borough Road and British Colleges plus played semipro soccer with Hounslow FC. Tim left Stoke to pursue a teaching degree in London in 1984 and then left London for New York in 1989 after being offered a full-time coaching role with Long Island Soccer Camps, which became Noga.

Tim also coached the York College men for five years after arriving in the United States, leading the Cardinals to the inaugural City University of New York (CUNY) men’s soccer final, a 2-1 win over John Jay College on October 27, 1990 at Lehman College in the Bronx. Besides being the first-ever CUNY soccer final, that game is notable for having a total of 25 countries represented through the players, coaches and match officials. He also coached York to the CUNY championship in 1994, his last season with the program.

While coaching youth teams, Tim served as Noga Camps Coaching Director from 1989 to 2004, Technical Director of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Select Program in 1996, head coach of the Eastern New York ODP Girls Program from 2003 to ’05, head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders Super Y-League teams from 2003 to 2006 and was a member of the US Soccer Grass Roots Design Group from 2014 to ‘16.

Currently, the Smithtown resident is staff coach of the LIJSL Coaching Academy, a US Soccer Instructor, a United Soccer Coaches national instructor as well as Eastern New York’s Director of Coaching Instruction for the past decade. Tim has given clinics at the United Soccer Coaches national conventions in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2011 and 2018.

He coached Women’s World Cup champion Crystal Dunn for six years as a kid as well as other star players such as Rachel Nuzzolese and Patrice Casjmir.

“The players I have coached have all been noteworthy for many different reasons,” Tim stated.

Tim writes a coaching article for Eastern New York which is always one of our most read articles every month. He advocates that youth soccer should always be fun, parents always should be positive and kids need an opportunity to rest their bodies too.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. July 18, 2018-The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) Dinner of Champions is a July tradition in the Hudson Valley, dating back almost all the way to the league’s founding four decades ago.

On July 10 and 11 at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor, the EHYSL honored 40 division champions and its four scholarship recipients. Each coach said very nice things about the team and introduced all the players. Nearly 1,000 players, coaches and family members attended this big event over the two nights.

The league has distributed the Michael Goldberg Scholarship Awards for over a quarter-century in memory of a young EHYSL player who passed away prematurely. Kezia Lovell and Olivia Racetta were honored as this year’s recipients.

Kezia Lovell played for the Poughkeepsie Phoenix for six years, capturing multiple league championships, as well as playing for the Arlington High School soccer varsity team. She has been a solid contributor to the school and the community, serving as a committee member and Co-President of the Diversity Club, working with kids at the Valley Christian Church and volunteering at the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital as well as other community organizations. Kezia achieved a cumulative GPA of 99% and is ranked 134 of 848 classmates at Arlington High School and this fall she will be entering the nursing program at Adelphi University.

Over the course of her high school career, Olivia Racetta played for the Liberty United Red Devils as well as Liberty’s High School varsity soccer team, serving as team captain for two years. She played four varsity sports in all, was a significant contributor and award winner in the school chorus and served four years in Student Government as the Treasurer. Olivia won multiple academic and scholastic awards, including twice receiving the Outstanding School Citizen Award. With a cumulative GPA of 100% and a class rank of second, she will be attending Ohio State University this fall.

The Dan Herbst Scholarship Awards has been given for over 15 years in memory of Dan Herbst, who was an EHYSL Past President plus a devoted contributor to the Yorktown Youth Soccer Club. Chloe Antalek and Leah Thoma received the Dan Herbst Award in 2018.

Beacon High School’s Chloe Antalek has been a solid competitor and contributor to the EHYSL's soccer program, playing for the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association ODP team and the East Hudson Academy team for five years as well as for club team East Fishkill Fire. She is Beacon High School’s leading scorer, senior captain and All-League Select. Chloe has served the soccer community very well by volunteering time to train inner-city kids at the Newburgh Armory, participating in the Relay for Life “Kick ‘in Cancer” campaign and working with Beacon’s younger girls soccer programs. She is a member of both the National Honor Society member and Beacon High School Honor Roll, had a GPA of 93% and will be entering Nyack College this fall.

Leah Thoma has played and coached for the East Fishkill Soccer Club for over 10 years and played scholastically for John Jay High School, serving as team captain. Although not being able to physically play in her junior year and senior years, Leah still attended their events. She is a NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Award winner for scholastic and athletic accomplishments. On campus, she was the President of the Renaissance Club, a peer mentor and a consistent member of both the Math and History Honor Society as well as the National Honor Society. She has been called an “Ambassador for John Jay High School.” With a GPA of 97% and a class rank in the top 10%, Illinois Wesleyan University is very lucky to have her on campus this fall.

“All four scholarship recipients are outstanding local players and have demonstrated exemplary academic and scholastic success during their four years of high school,” commented EHYSL President Jim Purdy.

Smithtown Arsenal Shut Out Manhattan Paris Saint-Germain, 1-0, to Win the Boys-Under-16 State Open Cup

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 6, 2013-The big rivalry in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) occurs at the Boys-Under-16 level between Smithtown Arsenal of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Manhattan Paris Saint-Germain of the Westchester Youth Soccer League (WYSL). They have played each other in the State Open Cup final four times with Manhattan winning last year and Smithtown winning the two previous times.

Smithtown won their division in the Region 1 Premier League with Manhattan finishing second but the Manhattanites won the final as Smithtown was eliminated in the semifinals.

So the State Open Cup final on June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange was a tantalizing match-up between two heavyweights. Smithtown won, 1-0, on a wonderful 25-yard goal by Harrison Weilbacher in the 61st minute. Arsenal keeper Noah Varonier came up huge in saving a penalty kick at the start of the game.

"It was a midfield battle, I thought that we played better in the middle of the field and that was the difference in the game," commented Smithtown coach Tom Lips, who played professionally with the New England Revolution as well as Switzerland’s FC St. Gallen.

Manhattan received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the match referees. Smithtown and Manhattan will both represent Eastern New York at the Regionals from June 28 to July 2 at the University of Rhode Island. As State Cup champions, Eastern New York is donating $2,000 to the team and paying all expense fees for the Regionals.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Alyssa Macur of Marlboro Receives a Jack Bauman Scholarship

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

August 11, 2020-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) congratulates Alyssa Macur, who is receiving a Jack Bauman Scholarship, which is based on success in high school as well as community service. The scholarship’s namesake, Jack Bauman, is considered the father of women’s soccer on Long Island. He was devoted to the Massapequa Soccer Club, Eastern New York and making sure that girls had as many opportunities to play soccer as boys did in an era when girls playing sports was not as accepted as it is today.

Alyssa also received a New York State Regent’s Diploma With Honors at Marlboro Central High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society plus played soccer, basketball and softball for the Dukes. She received the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar/Athlete Award an amazing six times.

She started playing soccer at five years old with the Highland United Soccer Club and played goalkeeper for club sides Force FC, New York Xtreme, Nirvana 360 Illusion and Primo FC. Additionally, Alyssa is a Grassroots Referee in the Hudson Valley Soccer Referees Association (HVSRA).

Alyssa wrote in her essay that “toward the end of my first year playing, my coach moved me to goalkeeper and my life changed forever…My goalkeeping is affected by my analytical approach to everything I do. I have to know how each position is supposed to play, how I need that position to play but also who is playing…

Soccer is so large in my life that it became a significant aspect in selecting my college and major. I will be attending Pace University as a student/athlete in the Honors College majoring in Business Management and Business Analytics. My ultimate career goal is to be a driving force with how Premier League teams are now judging their transfers as scouts are not being used by analytics professionals any longer.”

With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with nine leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. Staten Island’s Mike Segreto Honored as Personality of the Month in Eastern New York

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

August 9, 2018-In selecting a Personality of the Month, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) did not have to look far in honoring Trustee Mike Segreto for the month of August. Mike has volunteered on the Eastern New York Board of Directors for the past three years.

The St. George, Staten Island resident did not grow up with soccer as “it wasn’t very popular when I was growing up,” he explained. Mike became involved with the world’s most popular game, just like many other American adults, when his three daughters––Amanda, Kristen and Michelle––played. They started playing with the St. Joseph Hill Academy of the Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Mike coached all three of his girls.

He then became coach at the St. Joseph Hill Academy Elementary School in 1994 and their Assistant Director of Soccer in 2002, serving in that role for a decade.

In June 2012, he was elected to the SIYSL Board of Directors and volunteers as Fourth Vice President for the league. That was also the year he was named SIYSL’s representative to Eastern New York.

It’s hard to think about how Mike has any free time as he volunteers on the Coaches Education, TOPSoccer, Breast Cancer Awareness and Senior Night committees in addition to being Games Chairperson for SIYSL and on the State Open Cup, Arch Cup, Eastern New York Premier League, Disciplinary and Office committees for ENYYSA. All while being an avid fan of the New York Giants.

SIYSL President Bill Smith commented, “Mike is the kind of guy who is all business and gets the job done. He isn’t into politics of the board, he is a worker and can always be counted on when you need a volunteer. He means a lot to the SIYSL.“

“I am a simple man who never played the game, but grew to love soccer through my daughters and as long I can, I will help keep our children playing,” Mike explained. "I would like to give a special thanks to my lovely girlfriend Fina, for her patience and support in my soccer life."

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Everybody is Welcome in Youth Soccer!

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

April 26, 2019-Everybody plays and everybody is included in youth soccer leagues across the United States.

Very sadly, there have been a few unseemly incidents of a racial nature recently on New York City soccer fields which has caused players to feel unwelcome and excluded. So America’s oldest youth soccer league, the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), took a stand against racism in providing an environment where everybody is treated with dignity and respect.

On the weekend of April 13 and 14, players and coaches walked hand-in-hand before their games and their photos were shared on social media under the hashtag #STANDAGAINSTRACISM. In the CJSL's social media contest, South Bronx United won New York City FC tickets with the top post on Instagram.

CJSL Director Dimitrie Draguca stated, “We look forward to making this an annual event and taking the first steps in ensuring that all our young athletes feel welcome and included when they step on the soccer field.“

US Youth Soccer Unveils New Brand Identity

FRISCO, Texas, April 2, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — US Youth Soccer, the largest youth sport organization in the United States, today announced a complete redesign of its brand. The refreshed look and feel reflects the organization’s commitment to making soccer the preeminent youth sport in the country.

US Youth New Logo

“Our new brand identity and architecture is a true reflection of our mission, core values and the recent evolution of our governance,” said Chris Moore, CEO of US Youth Soccer. “From our modern new crest to the bold and clean event logos, the new brand projects strength and emphasizes our leadership position within the youth soccer landscape and our ongoing commitment to serving every player, coach, referee, and community, while also serving our membership,” said Moore.

SME, a strategic branding agency specializing in identity development, guided the US Youth Soccer rebrand which was supported by hundreds of hours of stakeholder interviews, positioning research, strategic planning and creative execution, all culminating in a rebranding journey that took nearly two years. “We were tasked with streamlining and modernizing the USYS brand to establish a clean, cohesive and scalable look across all properties and assets, while clearly communicating a national structure for competition, top programming, education and development,” said Ed O’Hara, President of SME.

The brand redesign was a collaborative and inclusive process comprised of several US Youth Soccer members and staff, resulting in a new masterbrand that showcases the following elements:

Beacon’s Rheyan Cader Honored as Personality of the Month in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

Rheyan_Cader_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

October 20, 2015-It’s very appropriate that Rheyan Cader of the Beacon Soccer Club is an avid sports fan supporting Liverpool, Red Bulls, the football Giants and the Yankees as he has something in common with Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson as both Rhey and Reggie can be called Mr. October. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Rhey has been honored as Personality of the Month for October.

Our honoree was born in Zimbabwe, Africa and came to the United States in 1989 to attend SUNY New Paltz, then Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh for his second degree. Rhey (pronounced like “Ray”) has been involved in soccer his entire life.

“It was what we did as a family and as a community. My father and uncles played for Arcadia United, a local club in the city that I grew up in, Harare, and at the conclusion of my uncle’s playing career, he assumed the role of club treasurer and also held other board positions,” Rhey stated. “I can remember going with him to games, cheering on the team and falling in love with the beautiful game! I started playing soccer socially at a very young age and then played club for Arcadia United and school ball for Prince Edward Academy right through the time I moved to the US to further my education. I was privileged to be selected to play on the regional and national school select team as a junior and senior in both soccer and basketball.”

In 1998, Rhey’s son Anthony turned four and he was eligible to play intramural soccer so his wife Saundra volunteered Rhey and his brother-in-law Charles to coach the team.

“The amazing thing is that I still keep in touch with many of the kids that played on the team and two of them currently play with my son on his college team so go Sage Gators!” Rhey said.

For nearly two decades, Rhey has coached three teams that have played in the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) and are all named the Beacon Burn. The first team, Beacon Burn, won the State Cup and they were followed by Beacon Burn ‘00 and Beacon Burn ‘03, the team he still coaches.

Besides volunteering as a coach, Rhey has moved up the ladder of the Beacon Soccer Club, currently made up of 400 boys players and 200 girls players, and has served as club president for the past dozen years. Accomplishments as president include a significant increase in registration for both intramural and travel team players, development of a travel team program that is highly competitive in EHYSL and Eastern New York, established a relationship with the Red Bulls focused on player development, started the Angel Fund to support families without financial means who have children interested in playing and recognize the accomplishments of all club members.

“When you think of Beacon soccer, Rhey Cader is the name you think of first. Following in the footsteps of some great leaders in the Beacon Soccer Club, Rhey has grabbed the baton and sprinted forward without missing a beat,” commented EHYSL President Jim Purdy. “In addition to the teams he coaches, Rhey has done everything humanly possible to ensure the youth of Beacon have the greatest soccer experience they could possibly have, for many years. His level-headed demeanor and firm leadership has helped shape the Beacon club to its excellent standing today. As a long-term club president, Rhey is also a person I can turn to when looking for feedback at the league level on new initiatives and ideas and his advice is always sound and spot on. He is a true soccer lifer and most deserving as Eastern New York Personality of the Month.”

Rhey is a father to three children––Anthony, Reanna and Zachary––and also volunteers with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and works at Novartis as Human Resources Business Partner, supporting the US Respiratory Franchise. He is responsible for aligning people to strategy, creating the right culture and developing future organizational capabilities that are critical for success, which is exactly what he has done as a soccer coach and club president.

Congratulations to youth soccer’s Mr. October, Rhey Cader.

Soccer Uniforms a Tribute to a Knight in Shining Armor

FC_Knights_jerseys_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

May 28, 2015-Eastern New York Hall of Famer Ken Gulmi, who volunteered as East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) President for an amazing 22 years and has been on the Board of Directors of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) for the past two decades, has also been quite busy as a youth soccer coach. Ken coached the Mahopac Hurricanes for 11 years, the Mahopac Indians and Mahopac Spirit girls for a combined five years as well as a Mahopac intramural team, the Golden Eagles, for six years. The past 16 years have been spent coaching two boys teams––the Mahopac Knights for seven years and the Yorktown Knights for nine.

Gulmi is currently coaching Yorktown in EHYSL’s Boys-Under-19, Division 1. And his former Knights players who are now too old for youth soccer are moving on to compete in the Under-23 division of the Greater Hudson Valley Soccer League (GHVSL) this summer. Those players agreed on the name FC Knights and on two uniforms––one light blue, one in purple––with Gulmi’s face on the front of the jersey as a tribute to their longtime coach. The image was created through applying a Photoshop filter (to a photo of Gulmi) by central defender Peter Zambelletti, who studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

“We are honoring Ken since he’s been great to all of us,” commented forward/defender Duane T. Jackson. “He brought us all together, many when we were sophomores in high school and did not have a team to play on, and he volunteered as our coach for many years.”

Forward Doug McKim is the one current Yorktown Knight who will be playing for FC Knights. 15 other players who already aged out from the EHYSL team are on FC Knights with two players from the Marist College men’s team, Axel Ender and Steven Arriano, becoming Knights for the first time.

Although home games will be played at Joe Palumbo Soccer Fields in Putnam Valley, the Knights kick off their season vs. East Fishkill at 6 pm this Sunday at Doherty Park in Beekman.

Gulmi is not the only adult in this article being described by superlatives as Jackson’s father, Duane M. Jackson, is an American hero. The elder Jackson is a Vietnam veteran and handbag vendor who owns street vending locations in Times Square. On May 1, 2010, he and Lance Orton, another street vendor, alerted the NYPD to smoke coming out of a Nissan Pathfinder SUV parked awkwardly in Times Square, foiling a terrorist attack as the crude bomb inside was eventually disarmed. Faisal Shahzad was arrested after he boarded a flight to Dubai at Kennedy Airport two days later.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border.
