The State Open Cup Now Features Two Paths to the Semifinals

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

August 11, 2017-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to offer an improved format for our State Open Cup, which is part of the National Championship Series. Starting in 2018, entry in the State Open Cup will be limited to the first 32 teams per age group who apply and pay the $225 entry fee and the competition will return to its single elimination roots.

Additionally, the final two teams in the State Open Cup tournament bracket and the top two teams of the Eastern New York Premier League (ENYPL) will advance to the semifinal round of the State Open Cup so there are now two pathways to make the final four:

• Playing in an Eastern New York league and registering for the State Open Cup

• Registering for the Eastern New York Premier League AND registering for the State Open Cup

The ENYPL is America’s oldest continuous Premier league, having originally kicked off play in 2001.

The Arch Cup, sponsored by Arch Capital Group, will continue to be divided into Platinum and Gold competitions, group play will remain for the first round and the entry fee is $200 per team.

“We are happy to include the top two teams from the ENYPL in the State Open Cup final four starting in 2018 to make the competition more inclusive,” stated Eastern New York President Richard Christiano. “Additionally, we’re pleased to continue to offer two levels of competition in the Arch Cup so that every travel team in Eastern New York has a legitimate shot to win a cup next spring.”

New York City Youth Soccer Teams Sweep the ENY Champions Cup

ENY_Champions_Cup_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 26, 2015-Start spreading the news that boys soccer teams from New York City swept all five age groups of the ENY Champions Cup, played on Sunday, June 21 at Owl Hollow Fields on Staten Island. This big event, for the top Division 1 teams from each of the 11 member leagues of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), was organized by the volunteers from Eastern New York as well as the Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL). There was a Final Four format with both the semifinals and finals played on the same day and when the 21 games were completed, these teams were top of the list:

Boys-Under-11: New York Kids (Big Apple Youth Soccer League) defeated B/W Gottschee ‘01 Blue (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League), 5-4

Boys-Under-12: AC Breukelen (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League) defeated the Beacon Burn (East Hudson Youth Soccer League), 4-2

Boys-Under-13: Latin Star SA Scorpions (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League) defeated B/W Gottschee ‘03 Royal (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League), 2-1

Boys-Under-14: B/W Gottschee (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League) defeated SC Gjoa Fire (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League), 2-1

Boys-Under-15: Staten Island United Gunners (Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League) shut out JPS Blue Devils (Westchester Youth Soccer District), 4-0

The festivities were part of Championship Weekend on Staten Island as the ENY Premier League finals were played the day before, also at Owl Hollow Fields. The Staten Island United Gunners took the Championship Weekend moniker literally as they won the ENY Premier League title on Saturday and the ENY Champions Cup on Sunday to complete a rare double of two championships in one weekend in their home borough.

“Thank you, Eastern New York, for organizing the ENY Champions Cup. It was a great day on good fields and our team was able to play against teams that we have not met before,” commented Rheyan Cader, coach of Boys-Under-12 finalist Beacon Burn.

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Celebrates Valentine’s Day

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

February 10, 2015-Over 100,000 kids––both boys and girls––from the East End of Long Island to the Canadian border are part of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). They obviously play soccer, not Cupid, but our non-profit organization is so large that many have a name that makes the upcoming Valentine’s Day special to them:

Six girls in Eastern New York have Valentine as a first name and 70 kids have Valentine as a last name.

24 boys in Eastern New York have Valentino as a first name and 78 kids use it as their surname.

There is just one player named Valentina and that’s a last name.

98 players definitely agree that “Love will find a way.” After all, four use Love as their first name while 94 have it as their last name.

If you said, “That’s Amore,” eight players in Eastern New York would turn around as that is their last name.

Five players are named after the Roman goddess of love. Just one has Venus as a first name while four have it as their last name.

There are 133 kids in Eastern New York named Rose.

And nearly 300 of our players have a dual celebration on February 14th as it’s also their birthday.

Perhaps one of these players will become as famous as another New Yorker with a Valentine’s Day-themed name, Rudolph Valentino. Born in Italy, he emigrated to the U.S. and starred in top silent films such as “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” and “The Sheik.” Valentino died in 1926 at the age of 31 because of severe pleuritis. Scores of despondent women attended his funeral at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Times Square as an estimated 100,000 in Manhattan that day paid their final respects to one of the top actors of the 1920s.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 4, 2014-The Levittown Gunners of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) are having a very successful Spring Season. Levittown are semifinalists in the Eastern New York Premier League (ENYPL) and recently won the Boys-Under-12 State Open Cup final. The game for the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) cup title took place on Saturday, May 31 at Stringham Park in LaGrange.

The match was scoreless through regulation and overtime so it went to the shootout, which Levittown won, 5-4, in six rounds. Justin Weinert scored the winning penalty kick and Levittown keeper Ethan Wood scored on his attempt in the fifth round.

“We had some opportunities to score during the game, we pressed but could not put the ball in the net yet we advance through the shootout,” commented Levittown coach Mike Borra.

Levittown received a $2,000 check from Eastern New York to defer the costs of playing in the Regionals from June 26 to July 1 in Kingston, Rhode Island. The accolades keep on coming as they also received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the match officials.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. State Cup to Introduce Group Play in the Opening Round

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

May 28, 2013-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that its State Cup format will change in the future to a group stage in the opening round. This format is similar to the format used by the popular UEFA Champions League, which played its final last Saturday. These changes will be in place for the 2013-14 State Cup season.

There will be a random draw used in both the State Open Cup and Arch Capital Group Cup competitions. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games and three officials will be requested for matches.

"Our players practice for months preparing for the State Cup and the coaches asked us for a format that prevents a team from being eliminated after the first game," commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. "Switching to group play in the opening round accomplishes this by guaranteeing every team is scheduled at least three State Cup games."

Teams that win the State Open Cup and advance to Regionals will have their remaining entry fees covered by Eastern New York. We will also be providing $2,000 in financial support of teams going to Regionals and $2,000 of additional support for teams advancing to the Nationals.

Registration begins on June 1 for the 2013-14 State Cup. To register your team, please log on to http://www.enysoccer.com/

June 11, 2023-Long Island SC shut out Stony Brook LGN Samurai Blue, 2-0, to receive the Howard Rubenstein Cup as Boys-Under-14 State Cup champs on June 3 at Stringham Park in LaGrange.

Now living in Kentucky, Rubenstein was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL).

“We played smart,” explained Long Island SC coach Tom Bowen. “We won the midfield battles and played a bit more direct than we usually do.”

Michael Price and Oracid Bencivenni scored Long Island’s goals and keeper Collin Schirmacher had the shutout in net.

Stony Brook LGN received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died seven years ago, started the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.

Long Island SC will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the East Regionals from June 23 to 29 in Loudoun County, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.

The State Cup was presented by LifeVac, the choking rescue device that has saved over 900 lives and counting.

Shrub Oak’s Veronica Lage Playing For Portugal

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer AssociationVeronica_Lage_for_Web

February 23, 2018-Veronica Lage has fulfilled a dream as she recently trained on the same fields that Cristiano Ronaldo plays on.

Veronica has become so proficient in soccer that she trained in Portugal with their Girls-Under-16 National Team. The Yorktown Heights resident was first registered in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) when she was just five years old.

Veronica, who turns 16 years old next month, is eligible to play for Portugal as both her parents are Portuguese and she holds dual citizenship.

“I was super excited to play in Portugal,“ she explained. “First, they requested proof of citizenship and information about me. My father sent them my citizenship documentation, a tape and information about my club and high school soccer career. Although I can speak Portuguese, my Dad says I’m only 75% proficient.”

In the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL), Veronica has played for Shrub Oak Girls United. Currently a sophomore at Lakeland High School, she started 13 games in defense and midfield last fall, scored her first varsity goal and was honored as the Most Improved Player by the coaching staff.

Veronica explained that all her new teammates are very talented and highly skilled. They were also very welcoming, helping her if something got lost in translation, as did the coaches, who sometimes explained what needed to be done to Veronica in perfect English.

She said that “what was really cool is that training took place at the Cidade do Futebol, soccer city. This is where all Portuguese national teams train. This is where Ronaldo trains! All of the national team trophies are there, and the memorabilia. My Dad loved taking pictures with all the trophies. On our last night, we stayed in the Pestana CR7 Hotel, and it’s a Cristiano-themed layout. The whole experience was all very cool!”

Make Your Players Fans of the Game

By Tim Bradbury, Director of Coaching, Eastern New York Youth SoccerTim_for_Web Association

One of the biggest steps any coach can make in player development is by getting their players to watch the game. The benefits of youth players watching the very best players in the world play are enormous. For far too long, most youth coaches have failed to make their players fans of the game. A combination of  a win at all costs focus that takes away from the beauty and enjoyment of the game and a failure to appreciate the learning value of players observing games is part of a problem. Perhaps there is also a cultural problem with youth players in their desire to be electronically engaged. Whatever the reasons, I urge all coaches to work on getting their players to watch and develop a love for the game.

I suggest that coaches try a few of the following approaches to inspire their players to watch the game:
