Manhattan Shows Their Pride By Defeating Quickstrike ‘94 Girls, 1-0, to Win the Girls-Under-19 State Open Cup

Manhattan_Pride_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 13, 2013-The Manhattan Pride of the Westchester Youth Soccer League (WYSL) blanked Quickstrike ‘94 Girls of the Hudson Valley Youth Soccer League (HVYSL), 1-0, to capture the Girls-Under-19 State Open Cup at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview, Long Island on June 8. Manhattan’s Jenn Peters scored on a deflection in the second half for the only goal of the game.

Manhattan keeper Kalijah Terilli, an Olympic Development Program player who is a member of the US Under-19 National Team pool, earned the shutout in goal.

"I thought that we had the better run of play and had multiple opportunities to score," said Manhattan coach Jay Myers. "But Quickstrike’s history and prowess is enough to make you nervous, though."

Manhattan also received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award. Now living in Ohio, the remarkable Rubenstein was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

Manhattan and Quickstrike will both represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 28 to July 2 at the University of Rhode Island. Manhattan is going to Rhode Island as our champions while Quickstrike has qualified as the wildcard. Eastern New York is donating $2,000 to both teams and paying all expense fees for the Regionals.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 12 leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. Eastern New York exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Special Children. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. Trying to End Our Referee Shortage Once and For All

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

September 6, 2023-At our peak in 2014, Eastern New York had over 4,000 registered refs and we have approximately 2,300 today. The average age of a ref in Eastern New York is 30 with six years of officiating experience. 300 new refs were certified this summer.
In a recent survey of our officials, earning money, staying involved with soccer and getting physical exercise were cited by refs as their favorite part of officiating. The least favorite part of being a referee was the abuse from spectators (noted by 70% of refs), coaches (50%) and players (20%). We lose more than half our referees in their first two years of officiating with the number one reason being verbal abuse by the so-called “adults” in youth soccer, coaches and parents. So the next time that you yell at a ref, you could be contributing to our referee shortage.
Please consider the following:
  • Refs pay for our uniforms. There are five color shirts used by US Soccer (yellow, black, red, blue and green) and when you consider short- and long-sleeve, shorts, socks, sweatsuits and shoes, the cost of a complete uniform is approximately $1,000.
  • Referees pay hundreds of dollars in annual dues to US Soccer and their local referee association
  • Refs attend monthly referee meetings given by their local association.
  • Referees must pass an annual rules recertification test to continue to ref, as well as watch safety videos and pass a Safe Sport test and background check every two years.
Being a referee is a very demanding avocation consisting of many hours of commitment every week. A man was watching his young daughter being trained by her coach on a soccer field while soccer referees were passing a fitness test running on the track around them. The man commented, “I got tired just watching you refs run all the laps that you did.”
With our ref shortage, many referees have worked overtime so your children could have a ref at their game and the referee that you are yelling at could be on his or her fifth game that day. So as we kick off the Fall Season, instead of yelling at the ref, thank him or her for being there instead.

Coliseum Inferno Bring the Girls-Under-17 State Cup Title Back to Utica

Coliseum_for_Web
By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 19, 2022-The Coliseum Inferno have built a dynasty in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) as they have won four of the last five State Cups in their age group. On Sunday, June 5 at sunny Stringham Park in LaGrange, Coliseum defeated Stony Brook LGN Arsenal, 4-2, to win the Girls-Under-17 State Cup title.

Logan Cookinham scored two goals plus Auna Snow and Willa Pratt each added one for the team from Utica.

“Both teams played tough but physically, we were a little stronger. Stony Brook did a tremendous job,” Coliseum coach Charlie Pratt said. “We love playing in the State Cup!”

Coliseum Inferno will represent Eastern New York at the East Regionals from June 24 to 30 in Charleston and Barboursville, West Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.

Stony Brook did not go home to Long Island empty-handed as they received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died five years ago, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.

With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with nine leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. Farmingdale United Win Their Fifth State Open Cup Championship

Farmingdale_United_for_Web

June 6, 2013-A long corner kick from Stringham Park in LaGrange proudly stands the United States Military Academy in West Point, the home of several cadets who went on to become five-star generals. At Stringham Park on June 2, Farmingdale United earned their fifth star as they have won the State Open Cup for an amazing five times.

While Farmingdale has been the dominant team in their age group (they are now playing Girls-Under-16), their championship games have come against five different opponents.

Farmingdale defeated the Lindenhurst Lady Flyers, 2-0, in the final between two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams. Kelly Gerdis scored on a header off a corner kick at the start of the game and Kaitlyn Loughren added a second off a through-pass from Taylor Sipos two minutes later.

"We started well, played hard from the start and that was the difference in the game," said Farmingdale coach Jamie Gonzalez.

Farmingdale did not give up a single goal in their four State Cup wins this year, outscoring their opponents 14-0. They will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 28 to July 2 at the University of Rhode Island. Eastern New York is donating $2,000 to the team and paying all expense fees for the Regionals.

Lindenhurst received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the game officials. Now retired, Mr. Rubenstein was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

December 11, 2013-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Eastern New York State Adult Soccer Association congratulate Joan Connor, who was inducted into the Eastern New York Soccer Hall of Fame at our 2013 Holiday Party on December 8 at Marina del Rey in the Bronx.

Joan has been involved in youth soccer for over 30 years, starting as an intramural coach in the Bethpage Soccer Club. As her children became older, she coached them on Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) travel teams. When Joan completed coaching her daughter Megan’s travel team (Under-10 through Under-19), Bethpage asked her to coach another team, which she gladly did. Seemingly doing it all, Joan also helped train coaches, served as the club president and club registrar.

In addition to her involvement on the club level, the Bethpage resident served the LIJSL as a games supervisor and coordinator, Chase, Waldbaum’s and Long Island Cup supervisor and coordinator. Joan has served on different committees within ENYYSA, including chairing the tournament control committee.

In 1999, Joan was elected as a member of the LIJSL Board of Directors and serves today as the 2nd Vice President. The LIJSL Hall of Famer is also the LIJSL registrar and tournament control chairperson plus a member of the scholarship and budget committees. She also volunteers her time to host the LIJSL Coaches Orientation courses which an amazing 10,500 coaches have completed.

"Joan has devoted a significant part of her life to youth soccer, spending many days and evenings volunteering her time for thousands of players, coaches and parents," commented LIJSL President Addie Mattei-Iaia, "It is only through the special dedication of people like Joan that the LIJSL has continued to provide opportunities for young players to succeed both athletically and with individual character building."

Tom Snyder Honored as a Top Referee in the Northeast

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer AssociationTom_Snyder_for_Web

October 26, 2017-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that one of our referees, Thomas Snyder of LaGrange, has been named National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) RefEDGE Referee of the Year-Northeast Region.

Tom first became involved in the world’s most popular sport when his parents registered him to play soccer at the age of five in the intramural soccer league for the LaGrange Soccer Club and he started refereeing while in college.

“I became involved in refereeing at the age of 19. During my sophomore year, the Fall Season had just ended and I knew I was no longer going to be playing soccer at Penn State Altoona, as I was going to be moving to the main campus of Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania at the conclusion of the spring semester,” Tom explained. “A course for new referees offered by the Hudson Valley Soccer Referee Association happened to be available over two weekends that fell during my fall break in November 2009. I knew that I still wanted to be involved with soccer in some capacity since I was no longer playing competitively, so I figured I’d give refereeing a try.”

The now 28-year-old also got the coaching bug and currently coaches in the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) Academy Program. He previously coached with the New York Red Bulls as well as several local EHYSL teams, in addition to volunteering and then as a student-assistant with the Penn State men’s team while completing his degree.

“I’ve known Thomas Snyder for several years both as a referee and as a coach and he has excelled in both areas,” commented EHYSL President Jim Purdy. “He has in the last few years taken a huge step as a referee where he has stood out as one of the best referees in the Northeast. His work as the match referee in professional, semi-professional and college games from D1 through junior college has only solidified the quality, knowledge and professionalism of his work. Last fall, I was told by a fellow longtime junior college head coach that Tom was the best referee he had working his team's matches in several years. I look forward to Tom continuing his rise and soon hope to be watching him refereeing MLS.”

Tom, the recipient of the 2014 Tony Mastreanni Rookie of the Year Award from a high school association, the Mid-Hudson Soccer Officials Association, has been a member of Eastern New York’s Elite Referee Program for the past three years.

He said, “Over the past three years, I have become a much better referee because of this program, as I’ve had the opportunity to learn from the many clinics run by Lee Suckle and Eastern New York's current and past top referees who come in and speak to us, as well as working games with the other referees involved with the group on a regular basis.”

Highlights of his referee career include being assigned to a final in the 2016 US Youth Soccer National Championships, being a part of the referee crew for the Boys-Under-14 final at the 2017 Dallas Cup plus the 2017 NPSL Final and his first professional games in the USL, NASL and NWSL.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. December 13, 2012-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that we have donated $2,000 to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation for Hurricane Sandy relief.

"If you were displaced through the hurricane or need other help, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is there to help you," commented Eastern New York Soccer Hall of Famer Burt Wilkes, President of the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL). The CJSL has also donated $500 to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

"I was at their Relief Center on Staten Island and a man was wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers sweatshirt so I kidded him that he’s in Jets and Giants territory," Mr. Wilkes continued. "Little did I realize that he drove all the way from Pittsburgh after filling up his U-Haul truck and also came with cash for Hurricane Sandy relief."

The sole purpose of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to honor the legacy of love by FDNY’s Stephen Siller, who gave his life on 9/11. The Foundation does this by following Stephen’s footsteps of selflessness and love by "doing good" in his memory. It has established "In the Line of Duty" programs for Firefighters, First Responders and Military plus "Legacy of Love" programs to make a lasting and positive difference in the lives of children who have lost one or both parents.

For Hurricane Sandy victims, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has established relief centers on Staten Island, in Gerritsen Beach and Red Hook in Brooklyn plus in Long Beach, Long Island. Join ENYYSA, the CJSL, Mayor Giuliani, Carl Banks, Robinson Cano and John Franco in contributing. For more information, log onto http://www.tunneltotowers.org/relief/
