The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Matthew Burns of Scotia has been selected as our Young Male Referee of the Year. He was selected out of more than 1,000 referees under the age of 19 in Eastern New York. He is the second consecutive Matthew to win this prestigious award as Matthew Schwartz of East Meadow, Long Island, was honored in 2011.

Now 18 years old, Matt Burns started refereeing in the Highland Soccer Club’s intramural program three years ago and now referees games in the Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL) and ENYYSA Premier League.

"Matt did an excellent job on all these assignments," commented CDYSL Operations Director Italo Carcich, the CDYSL Operations Director. "He was always willing to help us out when we needed a referee in a pinch. He did this all with a smile. He has been a hard-worker and a good listener when a mentor evaluated his performance. He has received excellent comments from coaches who submit the required information after every game."

"Regarding a game involving my team, it was a very physical game and it was competitive," said Tim Frament of the CDYSL Board of Directors. "It wasn’t until after the game that I realized that there was not one single call that I disagreed with. The opposing coach also never questioned one of Matt’s calls either."

Matt is currently a senior at Scotia-Glenville High School.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non- profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 12 leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Special Children. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. ENYYSA is a proud member of the United States Soccer Federation and United States Youth Soccer Association.
