State Cup

B/W Gottschee Academy 11 Win the Boys-Under-14 State Open Cup

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 7, 2025-B/W Gottschee Academy 11 shut out White Plains Academy National 2011, 1-0, on Sunday, June 1 at the Blue Sky Sports Complex in Middletown in a final played for the Howard Rubenstein Cup, emblematic of the Boys-Under-14 State Open Cup title in the Eastern New York  Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA).

Howard Rubenstein volunteered in seemingly every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL). The cup was named in his honor years ago and Howard passed away last year.

“It was a tough game and both teams played well,” stated B/W Gottschee coach Henry Morales. “Whoever scored the first goal was going to win.”

That goal was scored by Justin Londono. B/W Gottschee goalkeepers Declan Daly and Matthew Reyes shared the shutout in goal.

White Plains did not go back to Westchester empty-handed as they received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died nine years ago, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.

B/W Gottschee will represent Eastern New York at the East Regionals from June 28 to July 3 in Loudoun County, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 10 leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. Dix Hills Angel City Win the Girls-Under-13 State Open Cup

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 6, 2025-Those who want to see more goals scored in soccer games need to watch Dix Hills Angel City. The team scored an amazing 37 goals in five State Open Cup matches, averaging more than seven goals per game, to win the Girls-Under-13 cup.

In the final on Sunday, June 1 at the Blue Sky Sports Complex in Middletown, Dix Hills defeated NYCFC North, 5-2. Ashley Puliafico and Sarah Bachman each scored two goals while Kailey Pierce added one.

“It’s been a wonderful season,” Dix Hills coach Olando Evans said. “I took the team last season, it was a challenge to start but they kept improving. This is a special group of girls.”

NYCFC North did not leave Middletown empty-handed as they received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died nine years ago, started the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 6, 2025-In a very competitive match, the Auburndale Blast won the Boys-Under-13 State Open Cup on Sunday, June 1 at the Blue Sky Sports Complex in Middletown. Auburndale had tied East Coast FC Regional 2-2 in regulation, 3-3 after overtime and won the state championship in winning the shootout, 4-3.

“We were up 1-0, then we were losing 2-1, then we were down 3-2 in overtime, a back-and-fourth game,” explained Auburndale coach Tom Claro. “Both teams were battling and I have a lot of respect for East Coast.”

Gian Martinez scored two goals and Kevin Mueller added one for the new State Open Cup champs.

Auburndale will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the East Regionals from June 28 to July 3 in Loudoun County, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.

Stony Brook LGN Tsunami Receive the Joanne Roth Cup as Girls-Under-12 State Open Cup Champs

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 5, 2025-Wave after wave of players were on the attack as the Stony Brook LGN Tsunami defeated Fox Academy Premier Nirvana, 4-0, to win the Girls-Under-12 State Open Cup championship on Sunday, June 1 at the Blue Sky Sports Complex in Middletown.

The cup’s namesake, Joanne Roth, was a beloved and smiling presence at the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) office until her untimely passing from ALS in 2019.

Sophia Albertina scored two goals, Allison Degen and Molly Gilmartin added one apiece while goalkeeper Gabriella Coscia had the shutout in net.

“I was so impressed with how we moved the ball. What also helped us was our history of being here as a club plus we knew the competition and the complex,” stated Stony Brook LGN coach Frank Stagnitta. “And the parents are super supportive.”

Stony Brook LGN also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials.

White Plains Academy National Win the Boys-Under-12 State Open Cup

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 5, 2025-White Plains Academy National 2013 shut out Asphalt Green 2013, 1-0, to capture the Boys-Under-12 State Open Cup on Sunday, June 1 at the Blue Sky Sports Complex in Middletown. This trophy is named the Luis Montoya Cup.

The cup’s namesake, Luis Montoya, founded the Big Apple Youth Soccer League in 1997 to serve the growing number of soccer families who recently arrived in New York City. He had two tours of duty as Trustee of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) serving two Presidents, Barry Salter and Richard Christiano, before his passing four years ago. Luis’ daughter, Carrine Molite, travelled nearly 100 miles from her home on Long Island to present the trophy to White Plains.

Hugo Kassen scored the game’s only goal toward the end of the second half to bring the Luis Montoya Cup to Westchester.

“Goalkeeper Gabriel Franco is one of our strongest assets, a crucial part of our success,” commented White Plains coach John Florez. “The boys stepped up with a lot of heart and we wanted to win this game badly for the White Plains club.”

White Plains also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials.

23 State Cup Champions to be Crowned This Saturday

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

May 27, 2025-While the Champions League Final will be played in Munich this Saturday, May 31 between Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain to determine Europe’s best team, half a world away, 23 state champions will be crowned.

The State Cup concludes with 23 championship games on Saturday at the Blue Sky Sports Complex, a 249-acre grass venue in Middletown, to determine the best in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). This is the first time that the State Cup finals have been played in Orange County. For over decade, the championship games were played at Stringham Park in LaGrange in Dutchess County, east of the Hudson River, but have moved west of the Hudson in 2025. Both venues are centrally-located in Eastern New York.

The State Open Cup is for the top teams and it’s part of the National Championship Series. The Challenge Cup is for all teams at Under-10 and Under-11 as there is not a State Open Cup in those age groups. For Under-12 to Under-16, it’s for mid- to lower-tier squads.

The State Cup kicked off on March 1 with the preliminary rounds and this Saturday’s finals will determine which teams are now A-number one and top of the list in Eastern New York youth soccer.

For more info about the State Open Cup or Challenge Cup, please phone the ENYYSA office at 516-766-0849.

Top 10 Reasons Why Over 100,000 Kids Play Soccer in Eastern New York

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

January 7, 2025-Over 100,000 children and teenagers, from the East End of Long Island to the Canadian border, play soccer in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). Although some have gone on to play professional soccer plus in the World Cup and Olympics, all have learned the value of teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship and getting along with others through the life lessons they have learned on our soccer fields. Here are the Top 10 Reasons why we have so many players:

1. State Cup. Eastern New York has two levels of the State Cup––the State Open Cup and the Challenge Cup––so every premier and travel team in Eastern New York has a chance to win a state championship. Both competitions try to schedule games against local opponents as much as possible for this springtime competition. Chris Armas won the State Cup while competing for the Brentwood Bandits and went on to play and coach professional soccer. He had 66 caps while playing for the US Men’s National Team and will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on May 3.

2. National Championship. For ambitious teams looking to play against top competition and possibly win a national championship, they can do it through the State Open Cup as it’s part of the National Championship Series. After winning the State Open Cup, they would move on to Regionals and potentially Nationals. Or they could become a national champ through the US Youth Soccer National League. The top teams earn advancement to the Regionals as well as a chance to earn a coveted spot in the National Tier of the Leagues Program.

3. Olympic Development Program. ODP is considered the highest level of competition in each state association. Every year, players must be re-evaluated by the ODP professional staff of coaches for a position on each age-specific team. The identification process ends each summer with the most elite players within the East Region competing for a position on the regional team. Players are then identified by US Soccer staff coaches for possible entry to the national team program. Yet even those players who do not make the regional or the national teams often use ODP as a springboard to college scholarships and even on to professional soccer. Current US Women’s National Team players Sam Coffey, Crystal Dunn, Claire Hutton and Phallon Tullis-Joyce played in Eastern New York ODP as teenagers.

4. TOPSoccer. This is a wonderful program for Children With Special Needs. Special Children playing soccer in an organized league actually started in Eastern New York back in 1978 when the Huntington Boys Club (HBC) and Massapequa Soccer Club separately started programs in an era when Special Children playing sports is not as accepted as it is today. Craig Ludin, who has Down’s Syndrome and has been playing for HBC since he was a young boy, received so many medals in the Special Olympics that he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame over a decade ago. Craig’s teammate John Cronin started a very successful local business, John’s Crazy Socks, with his father Mark. Volunteers are always needed for this great program and you do not know what happens until you begin. The Manhasset Soccer Club’s Owen McCormack will be honored this month by US Youth Soccer as the National TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year for 2024.

5. Futsal. Futsal is the only version of indoor soccer approved by FIFA, soccer’s world governing body. The surface, ball and rules together favor ball control in small spaces and futsal is increasingly cited in the discussion on how to improve player development, particularly in the winter months here in Eastern New York when outdoor fields can be frozen and unplayable. Both New York Futsal and the Long Island Futsal League play under the Eastern New York umbrella and both are very active with league play this winter.

6. Risk Management. To protect our players, Eastern New York conducts background checks on coaches and referees before they participate in our games. They must pass this background check every two years to continue to be involved in our competitions. Eastern New York also provides awareness education to coaches and referees, communicating information regarding field and player safety.

7. Coaching Education. Under the supervision of Eastern New York Director of Coaching Tim Bradbury, the coaching licensing curriculum provides all soccer coaches, from the beginner to the advanced, with up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge so that Eastern New York coaches can help our players develop to their full potential. Coaches can earn state and national coaching credentials plus the courses offer valuable information and current coaching trends state-wide, nationally and internationally. All courses are available in both English and Spanish.

8. SAT and ACT Prep Courses. Eastern New York provides exclusive, free access to acclaimed SAT and ACT prep courses from eKnowledge, which is normally a $250 value. These courses can be taken online or via DVD, which makes them ideal for our busy student/athletes. Contact Siokbee Usaraga at siokbee@eknowledge.com

9. College Scholarships. Every summer, Eastern New York awards college scholarships to help defray the cost of college for deserving high school seniors. Five Eastern New York leagues––Capital District Youth Soccer League, Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League, East Hudson Youth Soccer League, Long Island Junior Soccer League and the Staten Island Youth Soccer League––all have separate scholarship programs as well.

10. Support of All Leagues, Players, Coaches and Refs. Eastern New York provides insurance for all its competitions, hosts referee certification and recertification, promotes member leagues and helped secure a new turf soccer field at Big Bush Park in Woodside that started play in autumn 2023.
