East Hudson’s Scout Program is Improving the Youth Soccer Experience

EHYSL_logo_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

July 9, 2019-The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) is made up of nearly 350 travel teams in six counties and is the second largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). So how does such a large league get its philosophy about behavior and game day operations to its players, coaches, referees and parents?

They send out the Scouts!

These Scouts have 10 years of more experience in the EHYSL as coaches, refs and administrators and they introduce themselves to coaches and referees before every game they attend. In their mandatory weekly reports, the Scouts give the EHYSL an excellent sampling what is happening at each field complex.

“The purpose and role of the East Hudson Scout program is to improve the youth soccer experience for all,” commented EHYSL President Jim Purdy. “Scouts attend multiple matches each league Sunday to observe players, coaches, parents and referees. We often find ourselves educating parents and some coaches on the Laws of the Game and changes to same over the years.“

Ken Gulmi volunteered as the EHYSL President for an amazing 22 years from 1990 to 2012. He now spends his Sundays during the Spring Season and Fall Season as a Scout and watches every game at the midfield line in-between the team benches.

“In one recent Under-10 game, one coach started complaining and then the referee got into an argument with the coach about it,” Gulmi explained. ”I spoke to the ref at halftime that he must never lose his cool and also admonished the coach about his behavior.”

Like Gulmi, Fred Valenti is both an Eastern New York and EHYSL Hall of Famer who now spends his Sundays as a Scout. Valenti said, “Referees feel they have somebody there who has their back when a Scout is at the field. I give referees a few pointers, particularly in the younger age groups where the refs tend to not have much experience and the kids’ parents don’t know the rules.“

President Purdy added, “What we have found is that nearly all appreciate our being present at matches as the overwhelming majority thank us for being there once they learn who we are and why we are there. We occasionally encounter that rare parent or coach who think it is acceptable to scream constantly at a teenage referee, often from their own club, with a club-assigned game. The Scouts help mentor young referees as our common purpose is to make the games as good as they can be.“

While the Scouts cannot be at every game, coaches and refs are taking what they learned from the Scouts and applying those lessons to their other matches. It certainly has worked as the number of Arbitration cases involving misbehaving coaches and team parents has decreased by more than 50% in the five years since EHYSL introduced its Scout Program.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 11 leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. July 27, 2016-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Claire Thoma is receiving a Patricia Louise Masotto and Brenda Driscoll Scholarship, which is based on academic and athletic success as well as community service. The scholarship’s namesakes were best friends and top women’s soccer players from Massapequa, Long Island. Eastern New York set up a scholarship in their name after they were killed by a drunk driver in 1985.

In the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL), Claire played for the East Fishkill Phantoms, Quickstrike and New York Xtreme FC ‘98s as well as the East Hudson Academy and Eastern New York’s Olympic Development Program (ODP). She also received a scholarship from the EHYSL in addition to Eastern New York.

At John Jay High School, the Hopewell Junction resident played both varsity soccer and basketball for four years, receiving the Scholar/Athlete Award in 2013 and ’14. She also won the Poughkeepsie Journal All-Section Soccer Honors and All-League Basketball Honors. In her essay, she wrote, “Being a team member has given me the opportunity to be a leader and it has taught me the importance of a positive attitude and hard work.“

Claire was Vice President of the Renaissance Club, a New Student Mentoring Leader, Interact Community Service Club and a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and High Honor Roll. She will be playing college soccer at Roanoke College in Virginia this fall.

Eastern New York Allows Players to Come Together to Showcase Their Talents

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

January 13, 2015-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that players from diverse squads can form a team for showcase tournaments.

Eastern New York member clubs, subject to their league’s approval, are now able to put together “Showcase Teams” to participate in tournaments, such as ENYYSA-sanctioned showcase events. This innovation allows the flexibility for players to be on a travel team and a tournament team (only one) without being reflected as a dual registered player.

“Let’s say that an Under-17 team is not playing in a college showcase tournament but several players from that team are interested in doing so,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “They now have the flexibility to join players from another team with the same situation and form a team to play in that tournament, giving these players the opportunity to be scouted by college coaches.”

The “Showcase Team” could have age-appropriate players from several member league clubs on the roster, with all players already being registered to those participating teams/clubs (having a current active, valid player pass). The combined team would register under one of the participating clubs via the SportsSignup system, by selecting “Showcase Team” as registration type. A separate, new player pass (for Showcase Teams) would be issued by the league with an “S” designating a “Showcase” player pass at the beginning of the player pass number.

All Showcase Teams with registered players need the approval of their home club (Registrar or President) and home league to participate.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Week 1 of the giveaway (Week of September 14): Celebrate Make a Soccer Ball Day
Make a soccer ball! It’s easy. While most American families have the financial means to purchase a soccer ball, not so for many other families around the world so many make their own balls so they could play soccer. The great Pelé played with either a sock stuffed with newspaper and tied with a string or with a grapefruit. See the video on making a soccer ball by clicking http://myobd.org

Teams From the United States and Canada to Play in the ODP College Showcase This Weekend in Fort Ann

ODP_College_Showcase_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

April 22, 2014-If you ask «Parlez-vous français?» when attending the 3rd Annual ODP College Showcase this weekend at Golden Goal Park in Fort Ann, you could receive an enthusiastic «Oui!». That’s because for the first time ever, the ODP College Showcase will have an international flavor as Provincial teams from the Province of Québec will be taking on Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams from the Northeast United States. 20 teams, both boys and girls squads of teens born in 1997, ‘98 and ‘99, will be competing and the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) will be well represented by seven ODP teams.

The games will be played this Saturday, April 26 from 8:15 am to 5:15 pm and on Sunday, April 27 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm.

ODP is traditionally considered the highest level of youth soccer in the state. Eastern New York has been running a very successful program for decades and former ODP players such as Crystal Dunn, Cari Roccaro and Nicholas Gaitan have all used ODP as a springboard to represent the United States recently in international competition.

“We are very pleased to host the 3rd Annual ODP College Showcase this weekend at Golden Goal Park,” commented Richard Christiano, President of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association. “To broaden the experience, we will have a panel of college coaches from all types of schools to discuss expectations and the how-to’s on being recruited plus once again have a Saturday night social with a DJ.”

Beautiful Golden Goal Park is in Fort Ann, a short corner kick from Lake George, and is located at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. To keep costs down, players and families will be staying in cabins at the scenic facility on both Friday and Saturday night.

27 coaches from both men’s and women’s programs attended last year and 39 programs have already committed to scouting the competition this weekend as our event becomes a fixture on the Northeast soccer calendar. This is purely a showcase, not a tournament, and no standings will be kept.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. July 1, 2017-The Big Apple Youth Soccer League’s New York Kids Alcones Neza recorded a 6-1-0 record in becoming champions of the Boys-Under-12 Division in the Eastern New York Premier Soccer League (ENYPL) this spring. Alcones Neza, Spanish for “City Falcons,” come from Queens and scored 32 goals, more than four per game, and gave up 15 during the ENYPL season.

“Our kids work very hard in every practice, the players understand tactics and, most importantly, the players have learned discipline and consistency plus have the right attitude,” explained New York Kids coordinator Cesar Martinez. “With these characteristics, we became champions.”

The ENYPL, organized by the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), is America’s oldest continuous Premier League, having originally kicked off play in 2001.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Champions Crowned at the Big Apple Youth Soccer Finals in Queens

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

November 30, 2017- 900 kids, mainly Latino, are registered in the Big Apple Youth Soccer League (BAYSL), and these kids come from the New York City boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, which is considered the most international borough as the people who live there were born in nearly every country in the world. Additionally, the immigrant population in Queens is nearly 50% with those who are Latino making up more than one in four residents. So it’s very appropriate that the BAYSL held its finals on November 18 in Queens, at Flushing-Meadows Park.

“The kids came, they were happy and they were very well-behaved during our six final games,” commented BAYSL Founder and President Luis Montoya, also the Third Vice President of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). “All of them received trophies and medals and the older age groups received a soccer ball too.”

The championship games pitted the teams that finished 1-2 in each division. In the small-sided finals, Vera’s SC defeated Latin Star Aguilas Boys, 6-1, in the Boys-Under-9 final, Las Islas Malvinas shut out Latin Star Halcones, 3-0, in Boys-Under-10, NorthStar Soccer had the right direction with their 3-1 win over New York Manchester in the Boys-Under-11 title match and Vera’s SC topped NorthStar Soccer, 4-3, in Boys-Under-12.

In the Boys-Under-13 championship game between two teams named “Kids,” Academia Super Kids defeated New York Kids, 2-0. In Boys-Under-14, NorthStar Soccer shut out Academia Super Kids, 1-0, in a very tight game.

Additionally, Latin Star won the Boys-Under-16 championship outright and did not have to play in a final.

Things are looking up for the BAYSL as 300 to 400 new players are expected to register in the league in 2018, according to President Montoya.

With over 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border.
