Halftime Talks That Scramble the Brains

By Tim Bradbury, Director of Coaching, Eastern New York Youth Soccer AssociationTim_for_Web

Having spent more than 30 years coaching and educating coaches in both formal and informal environments, I can honestly say that I have seen many highlights and many lowlights. I wish that the nature of these clips that play through my mind had evolved and that we were making new mistakes in teaching youth players.

One of the areas of greatest concern is that of the halftime talk. I am not sure why, perhaps it is the emotion of the game, perhaps it’s the inability of the coaches to remember what teaching and learning look like or perhaps it’s their inability to manage their emotions, whatever the reason, the result is always the same.

You will have to go a long way and search carefully to find a halftime talk that is not:

Emily Mildner Receives the Patricia Louise Masotto and Brenda Driscoll Scholarship

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

August 9, 2017-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) congratulates Emily Mildner, who is receiving a Patricia Louise Masotto and Brenda Driscoll Scholarship which is based on academic and athletic success as well as community service. The scholarship’s namesakes were best friends and top women’s soccer players from Massapequa, Long Island. Eastern New York set up a scholarship in their name after they were killed by a drunk driver in 1985.

Emily also received an East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) Scholarship.

Emily started playing soccer when she was six years old. She plays for the EHYSL’s Marlboro Mustangs as well as competing for the Hudson Valley Select Team plus was the captain of the Walkill High School girls varsity team.

She wrote in her essay, “I love the sport, and am beyond thrilled to be continuing to play in college. Soccer has taught me so many lessons on and off the field. Many of these lessons I would not have learned anywhere else. From dedication and time management, to communication and positivity, soccer has helped me excel in many other aspects of my life. I have also had the pleasure of coaching and refereeing youth soccer, which adds a whole new dimension to the game. It has helped me develop my communication skills and my patience. Not only is it fun, but it gives back to the community in so many positive ways.”

Academically, Emily is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society as well as being in the Walkill Strings Orchestra, the Walkill Wind Ensemble, the Walkill Jazz Ensemble, the Walkill Percussion Ensemble plus was selected for the All-County Honors Band and the All-County Strings Orchestra.

She graduated from Walkill Senior High School in June and will be attending Utica College as a Physical Therapy major.

She concluded, “I am continuing not only with academics, but with soccer and track and field as well. I am very excited to ‘Join the Herd’ and become a Utica College Pioneer.”

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 6, 2014-The Brentwood Freedom of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) won their second consecutive State Open Cup title with a 2-0 win over the Alleycats Redcats of the Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL). The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) Girls-Under-15 final was played on Saturday, May 31 at Stringham Park in LaGrange.

“We scored in the first 30 seconds of the second half which made the difference,” explained Brentwood coach Chris Roche. “It was a total team effort.”

Kiera Metzger scored that goal off an assist by Bri Donato and Nicole Chimenti added an insurance goal when she buried a 25-yard direct kick. Brentwood’s Keley Johnson had the shutout in goal.

Brentwood received a $2,000 check from Eastern New York to defer the costs of playing in the Regionals from June 26 to July 1 in Kingston, Rhode Island.

The Alleycats received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the match officials. Now retired, Mr. Rubenstein was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

With 123,843 youth soccer players––68,587 boys and 55,256 girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Eastern New York Honors Andy and Marlene Kasman as January Personalities

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

January 11, 2018-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Andy and Marlene Kasman have been selected as our Personalities of the Month for January. The Dix Hills residents have been volunteering for the Commack Soccer League in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for more than two decades.

Andy became involved with soccer after the family moved to Dix Hills and their son Brian, who was four, wanted to play. They missed the registration so Marlene spoke to the coordinator who said he had enough kids to make a peewee team but no coach. He said if Andy wanted to coach, their son could play. That was the humble beginning to Andy’s coaching career.

Marlene became involved because every Sunday, Andy and sons Brian and Jonathan were spending all day at the field playing, volunteering and refereeing, so she volunteered to help and subsequently became involved on the Commack Soccer League’s Executive Board.

Andy coached the LIJSL’s Commack Strikers, taking Jonathan and his teammates up to Boys-Under-17. Additionally, Andy volunteered as an age group coordinator for Commack while Marlene served as Commack’s Referee Coordinator for seven years.

As their sons were getting older and no longer playing, Marlene was looking to do something to stay involved in the Commack Soccer League, where they had made many friends, yet also to give back to the community. A friend’s son was playing soccer for the neighboring Huntington Boys Club’s TOPSoccer Program because Commack never had a program for these children with special needs. After doing some research, getting approval from the Executive Board of the Commack Soccer League and meeting with the LIJSL TOPSoccer committee, Andy and Marlene introduced the program to Commack in 2009.

40 kids, both boys and girls, currently play Commack TOPSoccer on Saturday mornings at 11 am at the Burr Road Soccer Complex during the spring and fall.

“The athletes have to be five years old and never age out of the program,” Marlene explained. “Our oldest athletes who have been with us since the beginning are currently 19 years old.”

Additionally, the Kasmans have organized a TOPSoccer Spring Tournament for the past two years with the third edition coming in 2018, which is completely supported by the Commack Soccer League and the LIJSL TOPSoccer Committee.

Longtime LIJSL TOPSoccer Chairperson Ann Marie Toth stated, “You can depend on the Kasmans for anything! They have done a wonderful job.”

Marlene concluded, “Although the focus is on us, I would like to add that we could not run this program without the help of the Commack Soccer League, a couple of adult coaches who are great friends that we met through soccer and the many high school and middle school Buddies who come down every week to work with these amazing special athletes.”

If you would like to register your child for Commack TOPSoccer or have questions, you can contact the Kasmans at kas4family@msn.com

Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League to Celebrate Its 80th Anniversary This Friday Night

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

October 29, 2013-The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), the most historic youth soccer league in the United States, is celebrating its 80th anniversary and is having an Anniversary Dinner/Dance this Friday night, November 1 at the Astoria-World Manor in Astoria. The CJSL is joining forces at the gala event once again with its brother league, the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL), which is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

Seven stalwarts from the CJSL are being inducted into the CJSL Hall of Fame that evening:

Miguel Brunengo had a standout youth soccer career playing for the GH Metros, B/W Gottschee and Westchester United. He helped the United States qualify for the Boys-Under-17 World Cup in Canada in 1987, then played for St. John’s University and for CSL teams Blue Angels, Istria Sport Club and Inka SC. Now a coach, he has led B/W Gottschee teams to six Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) State Cup titles and one Regional championship.

Carlo Bucich played in the CJSL for Inter-Giuliana 50 years ago, then was a member of the CCNY (City College of New York) teams. In 1978, he and Frank Legovich founded the Istria Sport Club, serving the club as president for several terms. He was then elected to the CJSL Board of Directors as a trustee, vice president and then president, serving two terms. Today, Istria SC’s youth teams play in the CJSL and its three senior teams play in the Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL) so Carlo is now a vice president and arbiter of the LISFL. Already a member of the ENYYSA Hall of Fame and this week the CJSL Hall of Fame, he will also be inducted into the LISFL Hall of Fame on November 22.

Joey Fink was a top player with B/W Gottschee, then earned a soccer scholarship to play at New York University. Best known locally for playing professional soccer with the New York Cosmos in the mid-1970’s, he also played with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL and New York United, California Sunshine, Cleveland Cobras and Carolina Lightnin’ of the ASL. He received six caps for the USA and became a prolific indoor player with the MISL’s Philadelphia Fever and Baltimore Blast, scoring 233 goals in 270 appearances.

Michael Leandrou founded the Eleftheria-Pancyprian Soccer Club and in 1981, the new club took its first steps by fielding a Boys-Under-10 team. Since then, Eleftheria-Pancyprian has become one of the most successful clubs in New York City, winning CJSL championships and State Cup titles. Michael served as president and currently serves as president emeritus of the growing club.

James Svendson concluded his playing career at the age of 16 and turned to coaching the Boys-Under-10 SC Gjoa Vikings. He coached the Vikings for five years, then coached the Xavier High School boys JV team, started the Bishop Kearney High School girls program and was a JV coach at Lawrence High School. He started serving on the CJSL Board of Directors when he was still a teenager and has been trustee, secretary, treasurer, vice president and president.

Jim Vogt played for a decade for the GH Metros as a kid, then played for their senior side. He joined the GH Metros Board of Directors, then the CJSL Board of Directors. A generation ago, he served as the CJSL president and also served ENYYSA as a trustee. Despite all those volunteer positions, he is best known for saving the iconic Metropolitan Oval from extinction in 2001.

Burt Wilkes was inducted into the ENYYSA Hall of Fame last year. He coached the Silver Lake Rams to two State Cup titles a decade ago and the Moore Catholic High School boys varsity team to the New York City Class B championship. He currently volunteers for ENYYSA as vice president and has served the CJSL as games chairperson, vice president plus president from 2006 to 2013.

Congratulations to the seven newest Hall of Famers!

Garden City Warriors Win the Boys-Under-12 State Championship

Garden_City_Warriors_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

June 7, 2018-For Garden City Warriors coaches Chris Thompson and Joe Esposito, it was déjà vu all over again. The Warriors team they coach in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) shut out the Manhattan Kickers of the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), 5-0, to win the Boys-Under-12 State Open Cup.

Thompson won the State Open Cup as a Boys-Under-12 player with the Garden City Colts in 1978 and Esposito won it also as a Boys-Under-12 player with the Garden City Cougars in 1982.

“Our sons are Travis Thompson and Tommy Esposito and we hope they will be able to continue the tradition,” stated Coach Thompson.

In the 2018 final on June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange, Travis Thompson and Peter DeBusschere (grandson of NBA legend Dave DeBusschere) both scored two goals and Andrew Fuoco added one while Danny Psaki had the shutout in goal.

Garden City will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 29 to July 3 in Spotsylvania, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.

Manhattan received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award, as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.

Top 10 Reasons 100,000 Kids Play Soccer in Eastern New York

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

January 5, 2021-Approximately 100,000 children and teenagers, from the East End of Long Island to the Canadian border, play soccer in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). Although some have gone on to play professional soccer plus in the World Cup and Olympics, all have learned the value of teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship and getting along with others through the life lessons they have learned on our soccer fields. Here are the Top 10 Reasons why we have so many players:

1. Olympic Development Program. ODP is considered the highest level of competition in each state association. Every year, players must be re-evaluated by the ODP professional staff of coaches for a position on each age-specific team. The identification process ends each summer with the most elite players within the East Region competing for a position on the regional team. Players are then identified by US Soccer staff coaches for possible entry to the national team program. Crystal Dunn and Allie Long are Eastern New York ODP graduates and Women’s World Cup champs yet even those players who do not make the regional or the national teams often use ODP as a springboard to college scholarships and even on to professional soccer.

2. State Cup. Eastern New York has two levels of the State Cup––the State Open Cup and the Challenge Cup––so every premier and travel team in Eastern New York has a chance to win a state championship. Both competitions try and schedule games against local opponents as much as possible. The finals of both will be played on June 5 and 6, 2021 as that weekend will be a celebration of New York soccer.

3. National Championship. For ambitious teams looking to play against top competition and possibly win a national championship, they can do it through the State Open Cup as it’s part of the National Championship Series. After winning the State Open Cup, they would move on to Regionals and potentially Nationals. Or they could become a national champ through the US Youth Soccer National League. The league in New York is organized by the Eastern Development Program (EDP), which joined US Youth Soccer three years ago. The top teams earn advancement to the Regionals as well as a chance to earn a coveted spot in the National Tier of the Leagues Program.

4. TOPSoccer. This is a wonderful program for Children With Special Needs. Special Children playing soccer in an organized league actually started in Eastern New York back in 1978 when the Huntington Boys Club (HBC) and Massapequa Soccer Club separately started programs in an era when Special Children playing sports is not as accepted as it is today. Craig Ludin, who has Down’s Syndrome and has been playing for HBC since he was a young boy, received so many medals in the Special Olympics that he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame a decade ago. Craig’s teammate John Cronin started a very successful local business, John’s Crazy Socks, with his father Mark. East Islip TOPSoccer volunteer Bella Pepe was recently honored as the East Region TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year.

5. Futsal. Futsal is the only version of indoor soccer approved by FIFA, soccer’s world governing body. Many of Brazil’s best players ever such as Pelé, Zico, Socrates, Bebeto, Ronaldinho and Marta all played a version of this 5v5 developmental game as children. The surface, ball and rules together favor ball control in small spaces and futsal is increasingly cited in the discussion on how to improve player development. Both New York Futsal and the Long Island Futsal League play futsal under the Eastern York umbrella and both leagues are taking a break right now because of concerns about indoor transmission of the virus.

6. Risk Management. To protect our players, Eastern New York conducts background checks on coaches and referees before they participate in our games. They must pass this background check every two years to continue to be involved in our competitions. Eastern New York also provides awareness education to coaches, communicating information regarding field and player safety.

7. Coaching Education. Under the supervision of Eastern New York Director of Coaching Instruction Tim Bradbury, the coaching licensing curriculum provides all soccer coaches, from the beginner to the advanced, with up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge so that Eastern New York coaches can help our players develop to their full potential. Coaches can earn state and national coaching credentials plus the courses offer valuable information and current coaching trends state-wide, nationally and internationally. All courses are available in both English and Spanish.

8. SAT and ACT Prep Courses. Eastern New York provides exclusive, free access to acclaimed SAT and ACT prep courses from eKnowledge, which is normally a $250 value. These courses can be taken online or via DVD, which makes them ideal for our busy student/athletes.

9. College Scholarships. Every summer, Eastern New York awards college scholarships to help defray the cost of college for deserving high school seniors. Five Eastern New York leagues––Capital District Youth Soccer League, Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League, East Hudson Youth Soccer League, Long Island Junior Soccer League and the Staten Island Youth Soccer League––all have separate scholarship programs as well.

10. Hall of Famers. The five leagues listed above all have Halls of Fame, just as Eastern New York does. Nearly 100 have been inducted into the Eastern New York Hall of Fame. These men and women have given incredible amounts of time volunteering to make a difference on soccer fields and many are still involved in Eastern New York programs and our leagues today.

With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with nine leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators.
