Staten Island Youth Soccer League President Bill Smith Selected to the Power 100

Bill_Smith_for_Web

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

March 28, 2018-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) President Bill Smith has been selected as one of the 100 most powerful people on Staten Island. The Staten Island Power 100 list honors the 100 most influential people in government, business, culture and social services. The group will salute Bill and the other top leaders on Thursday, April 26 at a reception at the Hilton Garden Inn (1100 South Ave., Staten Island, NY 10314) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This is far from the first honor for Bill, as he was most notably inducted into the Halls of Fame for the SIYSL in 2013 and for Eastern New York a year later.

Bill started his career in youth soccer a quarter-century ago, coaching the SIYSL’s Richmondtown Wildcats Girls-Under-6 team. The following year, he began coaching the girls Rockets team for the same club, serving as their head coach for the next six years and capturing numerous tournament championships along the way.

In 1996, Bill became director of the Richmondtown Soccer Club and increased membership by 71% during his tenure. He also assumed another coaching responsibility, the club’s Boys-Under-6 team. In 1999, Bill took on the additional responsibility of training Richmondtown’s entire program.

In 1997, the Oakwood resident also began coaching the Boys-Under-8 team for Staten Island United, continuing as their coach for the next 10 years. Bill received his US Soccer National D coaching license and also became a certified referee plus certified assignor at that time. He went on to coach the Metrostars/Red Bulls Academy team and at Monsignor Farrell High School.

In 1995, Bill joined the SIYSL’s Executive Board as Fourth VP and moved up the ranks. In 2004, Bill was elected President of SIYSL’s more than 5,200 players, a position he still holds today.

Under his leadership during the past 14 years, SISYL has implemented the following:
• TOPSoccer for children with special needs
• SIYSL Presidents Cup competition
• 3v3 Friendship Cup for intramural players
• SIYSL select soccer program
• SIYSL Hall of Fame
• SIYSL Indoor Recreational Tournament
• Senior Day recognizing middle-school graduates from the SIYSL
• Annual SIYSL Holiday Gala and recognition for volunteers
• Construction of a SIYSL soccer complex to be built in the Hurricane Sandy-ravaged section of Oakwood Beach, where homes once stood

In 2010, Bill was elected to the ENYYSA Executive Board as Fourth VP and is still a member, currently serving as the Second VP while volunteering on many committees.

A Field-Good Story as the Metrokids Return to Renovated Big Bush Park This Saturday

September 6, 2023-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that youth soccer will return to Big Bush Park in Woodside this Saturday, September 9. The park is located between 61st and 64th Streets by Laurel Hill Boulevard, in the shadow of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE).

Eastern New York and our youth league that primarily uses the park, the Metrokids Youth Soccer League, advocated replacing the badly-worn out Astroturf field since the spring of 2022. New York City Parks responded and put down a new high-quality synthetic turf field in 2023. Councilwoman Julie Won said her office had secured $847,000 from the Mayor’s office to finance the project, which is $423,000 less than the figure initially allocated for the revamp.

Metrokids was founded in 1998 and has over 1,000 players playing in 24 clubs and as its name suggests, is a city-oriented league.

The renovation of the soccer field at Big Bush Park comes six years after a different section of the park, to the north of the soccer field, underwent a $1.8 million revamp to make way for a children’s play area and passive recreation.

Eastern New York and the Metrokids thank New York City for funding the renovation and caring about the safety of all its residents.

Rotterdam United Premier Win the Girls-Under-15 State Open Cup

June 10, 2018-Rotterdam United Premier of the Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL) won the Eastern New York Premier League (ENYPL) title last year and they added the Girls-Under-15 State Open Cup trophy, named the Jack Bauman Cup, on June 2. This Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) final was played at Stringham Park in LaGrange as they shut out New York Surf Academy of the Westchester Youth Soccer District (WYSD), 1-0.

The cup’s namesake, Jack Bauman, is considered the father of women’s soccer on Long Island. Jack was devoted to the Massapequa Soccer Club, Eastern New York and making sure that girls had as many opportunities to play soccer as boys did.

Rotterdam coach Scott Byrne explained, “Our win was because of the effort of the girls. They made it their goal to get into the Top 10 in the state, which in Eastern New York is very competitive."

Gianna Viscusi scored the game’s only goal while keeper Deanna Lopez got the shutout.

New York Surf did not go home empty-handed as they received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award, as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread around the world.

Rotterdam will represent Eastern New York at the Regionals from June 29 to July 3 in Spotsylvania, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.

Eastern New York’s Livio D’Arpino Scholarship is Awarded to Michael Sguera of Oceanside

August 21, 2015-The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is very pleased to announce that Oceanside’s Michael Sguera is receiving a Livio D’Arpino Scholarship. D’Arpino was an Eastern New York Vice President who was involved in seemingly every level of local soccer before his untimely passing in 2002.

In his essay, Michael wrote that “I did not have the fortune of knowing Mr. D’Arpino but he was my dad’s coach when he played for Frosinone and my dad said he was a great mentor.”

Michael used his leadership ability to serve as captain of both the Oceanside Pirates of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and of Oceanside High School’s varsity team. He has been playing soccer since age four and also has been a referee since the age of 13.

At Oceanside High School, he’s a member of the National Honor Society and International Language Honor Society plus volunteers his time coaching in TOPSoccer Special Children’s Program of his local club, Oceanside United. Additionally, he works after school and on weekends at Patosa Ravioli.

“Michael posses certain qualities which make him an absolute pleasure to coach. He has shown great improvement due to his tremendous work ethic and passion for the game and puts himself through a demanding off-season workout program,” commented Oceanside High School boys varsity coach Joseph Pumo. “Michael is always the first to show up for practice and the last to leave due to him getting in extra practice time. He works extremely well with his peers and puts the needs of the team before his own. This selfless attitude makes Michael a favorite of his teammates.”

We wish Michael the best as he studies and plays soccer at SUNY New Paltz.

Time for Change and Repeat Loudly

By Tim Bradbury, Director of Coaching Instruction, Eastern New York Youth Soccer AssociationTim_for_Web-small

If you look around, you can find reports and podcasts that shed a very open and honest light on youth sports and the disturbing figures and facts. One such report is available at the link below

https://www.aspenprojectplay.org/national-youth-sport-survey-1

The report, please read it carefully, presents many facts. Perhaps the most disturbing is

“The average child today spends less than three years playing a sport, quitting by age 11, most often because the sport just isn’t fun anymore.”

With a bit of effort and research it is easy to access and watch, listen or read the following :

1. Nike Designed to Move Report https://news.nike.com/news/designed-to-move

2. ESPN videos and kids quitting sports https://youtu.be/WQgCDghLiHM

3. Dr. Amanda Visek and her work on Fun Maps https://changingthegameproject.com/woc-30-makes-sports-fun-athletes-ages-amanda-visek-phd/

I urge all parents who believe that they want their child to live a long and healthy life to both read, watch, and listen to all the above and THEN READ ON!!

What is apparent is that most soccer clubs have it wrong and that the overemphasis upon winning before development and FUN has created an environment that the kids are clearly saying that they want no part of.

I think it is time we listened!! It is too important to get wrong! Every time I watch the news or read a newspaper, I am more convinced than ever that good youth sports environments are crucial. In a culture dominated by gun violence and hatred, video games, and social media (along with the pressure that comes with it) we need a flag of hope.

I believe the best place for kids to develop both as people and lifelong athletes should be in youth sports clubs. All clubs should be taking stock of their mission statement, core values, and the environments they place players within. What is obvious is that change is needed. I offer the following as a suggested list of best practices that may help ensure we get to keep kids in the game for more than three years.

1) Have a definite plan for parent engagement. Without the support of the parents, your efforts will be futile. Youth coaches have to stop seeing parents as the enemy, they want their kids to have fun and develop.

2) Have a definite plan for coach development and education and PUT your best coaches with the younger ages. If we get it right at square one, they may play for life.

Kids naturally compete but they don’t need or desire an atmosphere that is dependent on wins and losses. Have a clear and consistent message for coaches and parents alike about the place of FUN, development, and learning.

Connect with all your players as people first. Part of this is coach education but part of it needs to be club philosophy. Become a transformational club with fun days, barbecues, beach parties, charity events, and simple social gatherings where the ball is put away and parents, players, and coaches simply get to connect.

Have a long-term plan that protects players from the win at all costs and a stress-ridden atmosphere. Find jamborees instead of tournaments.

Think outside the box. It seems many of our athletes who may enjoy being in one sport are leaving due to extreme experiences in another. Why not become a sports club? Perhaps soccer, beach volleyball and basketball. Think of the positives: periodization, culture, broad-based physical development, and philosophy.

Town of Poughkeepsie Soccer Club President Bo Demczar Honored as Eastern New York Personality of the Month

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

Bo_for_WebJuly 6, 2019-Happy Birthday to Bohdan Demczar, whose big day is today. The Town of Poughkeepsie Soccer Club President is being celebrated by the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) as our Personality of the Month for July.

Like many American adults, Bo became involved in soccer when he first registered his kids to play, which was 22 years ago. Bo coached his sons’ and daughter’s squads until they entered the travel team program of the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) when they were Under-10, and he served as the assistant coach of those teams for a few years.

But the Hyde Park resident found his calling in soccer on the administrative end with the Town of Poughkeepsie Soccer Club (TOPSC). He has volunteered as Secretary (4 years), Treasurer (4 years as well), been the club’s Registrar, Tournament Director plus President of TOPSC for the past three years.

“I have grown the TOPSC Board from 9 to 15 active individuals, bringing a mix of personalities to the group. Trying to get volunteers has not been easy,” Bo explained. “I have to make challenging decisions every day that face our club, that includes club strategies, field challenges, coaching staff, dealing with team situations, training, player development and parent complaints to name a few. We have a great Board that supports me and assists in helping run our non-profit organization.”

During the past three years, TOPSC’s travel team and intramural programs have both expanded and the number of travel teams playing in EHYSL has increased to 21. Last year, the Poughkeepsie Columbus Day Weekend Tournament sold out with many premier teams participating.

Additionally during Bo’s tenure as TOPSC President, many improvements have been made to Greenvale Park including new goals and nets, benches for all fields, expanding the sprinkler system plus a new announcement board and concrete pavilion at the park. The number of club sponsors increased during this time and a TOPSC coach was recognized by EHYSL as a Coach of the Year in each of Bo’s three years leading the club.

“Bo has been a tremendous asset to TOPSC for many years as both a coach and an administrator,” commented EHYSL President Jim Purdy, who nominated Bo for Personality of the Month.  “Over the last three years, Bo reluctantly took over the leadership of his club after Joe Carucci, who was the club's former president, moved to Texas. Shortly after taking over, he faced several pay-to-play programs looking to recruit teams from the club. He worked tirelessly to keep those teams and made sure every player who wanted to play for the club had the opportunity to do so.“

And all this volunteering is now occurring after Bo’s kids have long since graduated from youth soccer, have graduated from college too and are pursuing their own careers. From 9 to 5, Bo works for IBM as Senior Engineer addressing complex client situations and as an accountant who is registered as an Enrolled Agent representing clients in tax situations.

Sportsmanship, Dedication and Gratitude Reign at Amputee Soccer Game

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

February 7, 2023-When the New England Revolution came to Long Island to take on the New York Red Bulls in an amputee soccer match on February 4, they brought the harsh New England winter with them as temps were well below freezing. Luckily, the 7 vs. 7 match was indoors at Sportime in Kings Park.

The six field players have two arms and one leg. The goalkeeper has one arm and two legs. A team’s better chance of scoring is on the side of the keeper that does not have an arm.

“But the keeper is aware of this and compensating for that,” commented US National Amputee Team coach Dr. Eric Lamberg, who also coaches the Boys-Under-19 Hauppauge USA that plays in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and is currently wintering in the Long Island Futsal League (LIFL).

Dr. Lamberg added, “The players here today from New York and New England are excited to have people come and support them.”

New England won the game, 2-1, in a very sporting match between two teams affiliated with their MLS namesakes.

After the match, New England and US National Amputee Team captain Nico Calabria said to the crowd, “All the people here is a dream come true. I have players coming two hours to practice and sleeping on my couch just so we can play soccer as a team.”

Our national team played in the Amputee World Cup in Turkey last year and is currently ranked #15 in the world.

New York’s 29-year-old captain, Jovan Booker, grew up in Cutchogue playing for the LIJSL’s Mattituck Roadrunners and now coaches youth soccer with North Fork United. He played in the LIJSL with a prosthesis on his right leg after it was amputated because of a birth defect. Jovan also currently plays with the US National Amputee Team.

He stated, “Four years ago, we started by playing Regional teams and now we have all this support.”

Alexia Michitti is one of the two New York goalkeepers and she lives just across the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) border in New York West, playing for BC United of Binghamton as a kid and one season as a forward for Ithaca College. She is known for her freestyle skills juggling a soccer ball. Alexia commutes to play soccer from Vestal, a 460-mile round trip journey. But she is topped by the Red Bulls’ other goalkeeper, Thomas Reff, whose round trip from the Syracuse area is an amazing 600 miles.

Outside of soccer, some players wear a prosthesis, others choose not to and some are physically not able to do so. For more info about “the fastest game on one leg," please log on to https://www.usampsoccer.org

June 5, 2015-The third time was the charm for HBC Impact ‘00 of Huntington as they emerged victorious in their third trip to the State Open Cup final. On May 30 at Stringham Park in LaGrange, HBC shut out the Farmingdale Xtreme, 3-0, in the Girls-Under-14 championship game between two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams.

“We came to our first State Cup final still molding the team,” explained HBC coach Bill J. Carroll. “The second year, we came to the final as a team but lacked big game experience. This year, we put it all together.”

Talani Barnett, Gina Giovinco and Lauren Mastrandrea scored HBC’s goals.

Coach Carroll added, “I would like to thank Eastern New York for running a great cup competition.”

HBC also added the Howard Rubinstein Sportsmanship Award to their growing trophy case for the Fair Play they displayed during the final.

HBC received a $2,000 check from the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) to defray their costs during the National Championship Series. They will be playing in the Regionals from June 26 to 30 in Barboursville, West Virginia.
