June 8, 2019-Two teams from Long Island played a very competitive match in the Boys-Under-15 State Open Cup championship game that needed a shootout to determine the champion. SUSA B04 topped the 2018 State champs, South Shore FC Bulldogs United, 4-2 in the shootout, after tying in extra time, 1-1, on June 2 at sunny Stringham Park in LaGrange.
SUSA coach Bouba Camara stated, “I thought that we were a little bit faster and we managed the game well.“
Tyler Axelsen scored SUSA’s goal in overtime. He also scored a shootout goal as did Douglas Abrego, Dylan Luciano and Danny Perry with keeper Harry Huertas coming up huge with two saves in the shootout.
SUSA will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 28 to July 4 in Charleston, West Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.
South Shore received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. The namesake of the award, who died in 2016, was inducted into the Halls of Fame of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Eastern New York plus was honored as a Life Member by U.S. Soccer.
