Girls Competition Returns to the Big Apple Youth Soccer League

September 29, 2021-The Big Apple Youth Soccer League (BAYSL) was founded by Luis Montoya in 1997 to serve the growing number of soccer families who recently arrived in New York City.

There was a Big Apple girls competition in those early days but it was discontinued as it was very difficult to form teams with enough girls interested in playing so many of them started playing on boys squads instead. 18 years later, Big Apple is pleased to reintroduce a girls division of those born between 2006 and 2008. Playing this fall are Chivas Girls, Lady Wolves, Latin Stars Girls, Latin United and Victory United Girls.

“The idea is to bring more girls to the clubs so we have started this 5 vs. 5 girls competition at Flushing Meadows Park and we have two more clubs now interested in fielding girls teams,” commented Big Apple President Carlos Vergara.

With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with nine leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away.
