June 27, 2017-Two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams competed in the Girls-Under-11 Arch Cup Platinum final with the Lake Grove/Newfield Phoenix topping Smithtown Revolution, 4-3. This championship game was played on Saturday, June 3 at Stringham Park in LaGrange.
Ariana Robles scored two goals, Heather Abzug and Emily Scali added one each plus keeper Jessica Centeri made several outstanding saves to preserve the win for Lake Grove/Newfield.
“It was a very close, competitive game,” said Lake Grove/Newfield coach Elliott Abzug.
Smithtown received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died last year, started the Sportsmanship Program of the LIJSL in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.
