Syosset Sting Takes Second At Girls U-17 Nationals

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- The Syosset Elite 92 Sting took second place at the U.S. Youth Soccer Girls Under-17 championships on Sunday.  The Sting lost to the So Cal Blues Dodge, 1-0.

Lauren Bohaboy’s second goal of the tournament in the 48th minute was all So Cal needed en route to its first national title and third championship for the club.

Syosset’s best opportunity came in the 22nd minute when Liz Agiato deflected a hard shot off the post.

PREVIOUS DAYS...

DAY 3:

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- Despite losing its first game Friday, the Syosset Sting 92 Elite found itself in the Girls Under-17 championship game at the U.S. Youth Soccer nationals.

Syosset (2-1) will play the So Cal Blues Dodge (Cal South) in Sunday’s 8:30 a.m. finals on Field 5.

The Sting dropped a 2-1 decision to Slammers FC (Cal South) on Friday.

Courtney Proctor lifted Slammers into a lead it did not relinquish in the fourth minute before Morgan Valenzuela tallied in the 42nd minute.

Gabrielle Charno closed the gap for Syosset in the 65th minute, but the Sting could not equalize.

Meanwhile, the Hicksville Strikers lost in their third and final group match at the U.S. Youth Soccer Boys Under-17 nationals on Friday.

The Strikers (0-3) fell to the West Coast FC (Cal South), 3-0.

West Coast FC broke open a scoreless match with two goals a minute apart midway through the first half. Alfredo Ramirez scored in the 21st minute and Juan Guitierrez connected for the first of his two goals only a minute later.

Guitierrez closed out the scoring with a goal in the 54th minute.

The Alpharetta Ambush (Ga.) 93 will meet St. Louis Scott Gallagher Premier (Mo.) for the championship at Field 3 at 8 a.m. Sunday.’

DAY 2:

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- The Syosset Sting 92 Elite remained in contention for the Girls Under-17 national title at the U.S. Youth Soccer championships Thursday.

The Sting recorded a 2-1 victory over the D’Feeters 93 (Texas North), overcoming a 1-0 deficit by scoring twice within a nine-minute span in the second half.

Amy Marron connected in the 64th minute and Liana Cornacchio tallied in the 75th minute. Chioma Ubogagu had scored for the D’Feeters in the ninth minute.

Syosset will play Slammers FC (Cal South) in its third and final game in group play on Field 7. Slammers FC finished second in the national league.

Meanwhile, the Hicksville Strikers found themselves in last place on the second day of action in the Boys Under-17 age group at the U.S. Youth Soccer nationals on Thursday.

The Strikers dropped to 0-2 after losing a 4-2 decision to the Penn Fusion Soccer Academy (Pennsylvania East).

Hicksville played catch up for a good portion of the match.

Robert Friskey, who finished with a hat-trick, struck in the 19th minute before Colin Heffron equalized 20 minutes later.

But Matthew Sabin gave Penn a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish before Friskey connected four minutes into the second half.

Matthew Slotnick sliced the deficit to a 3-2, but Friskey again gave Penn some breathing room with an 85th-minute goal.

The Strikers play West Coast FC 92 (Cal South) at 8 a.m. Friday.

DAY 1:

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- The Syosset Sting Elite got off to a strong start at the U.S. Youth Soccer nationals, recording a 3-0 victory over Real So Cal White in the Girls Under-17 age group Thursday.

The Hicksville Strikers were not as fortunate, dropping a 3-2 decision to Alpharetta Ambush 93 Red in the Boys U-17 division.

For Syosset, Alissa Bianculli struck in the 29th minute, while Emily Banes gave the team some breathing room with a 64th-minute goal before Amy Marron added another in the 85th minute.

The Strikers had taken a 2-1 lead on Matthew Slotnick’s goal in the 74th minute before the Ambush rallied for two consecutive scores late in the match. Hector Alvarado equalized in the 83rd minute and Karl Chester connected for his second goal of the match three minutes later.

Jonathan Stallone gave Hicksville a 1-0 advantage in the 18th minute, but Chester’s first goal tied it in the 73rd minute.
