July 5, 2017-In an exciting final, Cedar Stars Staten Island of the Eastern New York Premier League (ENYPL) defeated the Valley Stream Cobras of the (LIJSL), 2-1, in extra time. This Boys-Under-16 Arch Cup Gold final was played on Saturday, June 10 at Stringham Park in LaGrange.
For Cedar Stars, Jonathan Mora scored on a penalty kick, Tom Mazza scored on a delicious 30-yard volley and Nunzio Lanza headed in a corner kick.
“We’re fit and we pressed really hard,” said Cedar Stars coach Sandy Rapaglia. “Valley Stream is a very good team but we took our chances well.”
Valley Stream did not leave the Hudson Valley without a prize as they received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. The namesake of the award, who died last year, was inducted into the Halls of Fame of the LIJSL and Eastern New York plus was honored as a Life Member by U.S. Soccer. Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980, it has since been copied around the world and he spoke about the benefits of Fair Play across the United States.
