ENYYSA ODP Grad Petke To Retire From Pro Soccer
Septemeber 2, 2010

Red Bulls veteran defender and fan favorite Mike Petke has decided to call it a career.

The Red Bulls announced Wednesday that Petke will retire after this season. Petke, a Bohemia, N.Y. native who played for the Brentwood Soccer Club, was an Eastern New York ODP standout as a youth player.

It was not known whether Petke will join the Red Bulls' front office after the season. He has said on several occasions that he would love to remain with the club after his retirement.

A 13-year MLS veteran, the 34-year-old Petke played for the franchise -- the Red Bulls and MetroStars -- over seven seasons.

He is the club’s all-time leader in games started and games and minutes played and was part of the team’s All-Time Best XI that was unveiled earlier this year.

“After many months of contemplation, I know that this is the best choice for me and my family,” Petke said. “When I first started playing in MLS, I could have not imagined the type of career I was so fortunate to experience over these past 13 years. I am indebted to my family, current and former teammates and coaches and the fans for their support and encouragement. I am at peace with my decision and blessed that I am able to end my career in a place where I truly call home.”

Petke was selected by the MetroStars in the first round of the 1998 college draft.

“Mike is a consummate professional and has represented our club with heart and dignity," Red Bulls sporting director and general manager Erik Soler said. "It is evident during my short time here why he is one of the team’s most popular players all-time. His ability, work ethic and leadership will be sorely missed, but we want to wish him the best of luck in this exciting new chapter of his life.”

Petke, a three-time MLS All-Star, played in 167 regular season games for the franchise, starting in 158 and logging 14,006 minutes. Petke played five seasons for the MetroStars and helped the club to its first-ever Eastern Conference championship game and division title in 2000.

He rejoined New York from the Colorado Rapids on Nov. 26, 2008 and played in 19 games in 2009. This season, Petke made 14 appearances, starting in 11, and he became the 12th player in MLS history to appear in 300 regular season matches, reaching the milestone with his start on May 20 against the Columbus Crew.

In the Grand Opening of the club’s brand-new stadium, Red Bull Arena, on March 20, Petke tallied the Red Bulls’ second goal of the match off a close range volley en route to a 3-1 win over Santos FC.

Petke played for D.C. United from 2003-05 and he won the MLS Cup for the first time of his career in 2004. In 2005, Petke was traded to the Rapids and made 80 appearances over three-plus years. He has scored 13 goals and four assists in regular season action, logging 25,731 minutes – a mark that is seventh all-time in MLS history.

Petke was part of the 2002 U.S. National Team pool and earned two caps. He attended Southern Connecticut State University, where he won a number of accolades including twice being named on the All-New England Collegiate Conference first team and the conference’s defensive player of the year.

ENYYSA's DiMartino, Spencer, Arikian, Meara Named To Hermann Watch List

Four players from Eastern New York have been named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List.

They include forwards Vicki DiMartino and Jasmyne Spencer, midfielder Benjamin Arikian and goalkeeper Ryan Meara.

DiMartino and Spencer were selected to the women's Watch List, while Arikian and Meara were picked for the men.

The Hermann Trophy is the highest individual honor in college soccer.

Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy by college coaches is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 7, 2011, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner, followed by a banquet to honor the three finalists.

Spencer, of Bay Shore, N.Y., is a junior at the University of Maryland.

This marked the first time that a Terrapin has been named to the pre-season watch list.

"One of Jasmyne's best qualities is her competitiveness, and the fact that she always plays as though she has something to prove," Maryland coach Brian Pensky said. "And in this case, she has proven that she belongs along-side the nation's top players."

Spencer is coming off a sophomore season that saw her selected to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team and a first team All-Southeast Region honoree by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She also was also a 2009 Soccer America MVP after leading the Terps with 23 points and nine goals.

"This is a great honor and I'm also humbled by my selection," Spencer said. "There are so many great players in the country and to be among them is exciting. It will also provide motivation for me to do my best throughout the season to help this team have a great year."

DiMartino, of Massapequa Park, N.Y., is a sophomore at Boston College.

She was named the Freshman of the Year by the ACC and Soccer America in 2009. She finished the season with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points.

DiMartino helped BC finish the season with a program-best 18 victories, advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I women's tournament and earn a share of the regular season championship in the ACC.

She earned first team all conference honors and second team all-American honors from the NSCAA. DiMartino was named a 2009 NSCAA Division 1 All-America second team selection and the ECAC offensive player of the year.

Arikian, of Islip, N.Y., is a senior at the University of Massachusetts.

He was named to the watch list for the second consecutive season. Arikian is a two-time All-Region First Team pick, and two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team selection, and the 2008 A-10 Midfielder of the Year. Earlier this month, he was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team.

The West Islip, N.Y., native is one of just three Atlantic 10 players featured on the list of 39 candidates nation-wide. Goalkeeper Ryan Meara of Fordham and forward Michael Roach of Saint Louis were also named to the list.

Arikian has played in 63 career matches at UMass, scoring nine goals while adding 17 assists for 35 points. He has five career game-winning goals. Last season, he factored into four game-winning goals either scoring or setting up the go-ahead tally. In 2008, Arikian scored or assisted the game-winning goal in eight of UMass' 10 wins.

He was a 2005 All-American at West Islip High School. He tallied 47 assists and 33 goals for his prep career.

Meara, of Yonkers, N.Y., is a junior at Fordham University.

Meara, who recently was named Premier Development League goalkeeper of the year while playing for the Newark Ironbound Express, is the second Rams player in two years to be selected to the list. Defender John Pardini (Smithtown, N.Y.) was among the 48 chosen to the 2008 Hermann watch list.

Meara represents one of two players from the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, with Roach from Saint Louis as the other representative. Fordham is one of three Catholic institutions who have players on the list.

He was selected as a preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection after garnering 2009 NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic and Atlantic 10 first team honors. Meara played all but nine minutes last season (1767:45), posted a 9-7-3 record, a 1.02 goals against average, and 7.5 shutouts. In league play, Meara led the Rams to a 6-1-2 mark, posting a 0.85 GAA, 4.5 shutouts, and a better than .800 save percentage.
