CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- Three Eastern New York teams captured Region I titles at the President’s Cup. The Manhattan Kickers (Girls Under-16), the East Meadow Arsenal (Boys U-13) and Bay Shore Powers (Girls U-13) won their respective championships at Clifton Commons. The Region I tournament was played Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The Kickers qualified for the President’s Cup nationals, which will be played in Murfreesboro, Tenn. July 8-11.
Bay Shore and East Meadow cannot participate in the nationals because that particular age group is not eligible to play at that level.
The Kickers pulled out a dramatic victory on the second to last kick of the Girls U-16 championship encounter, a 2-1 victory over the WSA Freedom, converting a goal off a corner kick late in the second extratime. The Freedom hurriedly brought the ball to the center spot and kicked off before the referee signaled the game was over.
East Meadow overcame the Central Susquehanna United (Eastern Pennsylvania) in the Boys U-13 championship game. The teams played an evenly match game en route to a 1-1 draw in regulation and extratime before the Arsenal prevailed in penalty kicks, 7-6.
Bay Shore road three first-half goals to a 3-1 triumph over the New England Wave (Rhode Island).
The Oceanside Shooting Stars dropped an 8-0 decision to Western United F.C. (Massachusetts) in the Girls U-17 final. The Shooting Stars played with 11 players in the title match, losing several performers to injuries on Saturday and previous commitments.
Individual stories about the three ENY championship teams will be posted soon.
