ENYYSA's Dunn Named U.S. Player Of The Match In U-20 Tournament Win
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala -- Defender Crystal Dunn of Rockville Centre, N.Y. was voted the USSoccer.com player of the match in the U.S.’s 2-1 win over Mexico at the CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s tournament on Tuesday. Dunn, an Eastern New York ODP graduate, keyed a backline that shut down Mexico for most of the match. The Mexicans scored a late goal.
The victory moved the Americans and Dunn into Thursday’s semifinals, where they will meet Costa Rica for an opportunity to clinch a berth for the 2010 FIFA U-20 WWC in Germany this summer.
The 2:30 p.m. match will take place at Estadio Cementos Progeso and will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel and streamed live on CONCACAF.com. Fans can also follow along in real time via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.
Costa Rica finished in second place in Group A behind Canada to earns its spot in the final four. The winner will claim a berth at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup which will be held July 13-Aug. 1 in Germany. In the other semifinal, Canada will square off against Mexico at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Both semifinal winners and the third place team will represent the CONCACAF region at the U-20 Women’s World Cup. Both semifinals, the third-place match (2:30 p.m. Saturday) and the final (5:30 p.m. Saturday) will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel with the final also broadcast on Fox Sports en Español.
It should not be surprising that Dunn has excelled in the CONCACAF tournament. After all, she was named girls high school soccer player of the year by Newsday.
Dunn, 17, who has verbally committed to the University of North Carolina next fall, also was named the Class A state player of the year by the New York State Sportswriters Association and was named a high school All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
For South Side, the Rockville Centre-based school this season, Dunn connected for 20 goals and set up 11 others. During the post-season Dunn was most dangerous when it counted, striking for nine goals and six assists in seven appearances. Not surprisingly, South Side has won three state championships during Dunn’s tenure. She has 48 goals and 38 assists in four years.
