Huntington, W.Va. -- Four teams from Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association -- the Dix Hills Thunder, East Fishkill Thunder, Hicksville Strikers and the Syosset Rough Riders Elite -- earned Region I championships on Tuesday.
Dix Hills won the Boys Under-14 crown, Hicksville earned the Boys U-16 championship and East Fishkill captured the Boys U-18 title. The Rough Riders took home the Girls U-16 championship at Barboursville Park.
All four teams qualified for the U.S. Youth Soccer nationals, which will be played in Lancaster, Mass. from July 21-26.
Dix Hills Thunder
For the second successive year, the Dix Hills Thunder earned a regional title, defeating New Jersey Soccer Academy 04 by a 1-0 score in the Boys U-14 final.
Richard Robinson struck for the lone goal in the 20th minute.
Hicksville Strikers
The Strikers outlasted the MPS McLean Hurricanes via a penalty kicks in the Boys U-16 final, 2-1.
Salgle Madnick had given the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, but Matthew Wendelken equalized in the 70th minute.
East Fishkill Thunder
Another team named Thunder, East Fishkill, also won by a 1-0 result over a New Jersey side, besting PDA Cryuff in the Boys U-18 final.
Mike Dix connected for the game-winner in the 28th minute.
Syosset Rough Riders Elite
The lone girls winner was the Rough Riders Elite, which recorded a 2-1 victory over Montclair United (N.J.) in extratime in the Girls U-16 final.
Liana Cornacchio scored both Riders goals, in the 74th minute and 100th minutes. Tanya Sood tallied for Montclair in the 80th minute.
Three teams fell short of their quest for regional glory, losing in their respective finals -- the Manhattan Kickers (Boys U-12), East Islip Red Dragons (Girls U-13) and the Albertson Fury (Girls U-17).
The Kickers dropped a 1-0 decision to Beachside (Conn.) as Austin Sims scored in the 34th minute.
The Dragons lost to the PDA Slammers, 1-0, as Caroline Chagares found the back of the net in the 37th minute.
The Fury dropped a 3-2 nail-biter to the PDA Fire. Katherine Greer (43rd minute) and Juliana Speroni (67th minute) tallied for Albertson, while Avery Jackson (43rd minute minute), Shannon Roche (67th minute) and Kristen Niederhaus (83rd minute) scored for PDA.
